Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Team Effort Sends Chargers Past Wildcats

Lancaster Bible had four players score in double figures as the Chargers won for the second time this week and defeated Cazenovia, 84-70 on Kistler Tiffany Benefits night at Horst Athletic Center. Junior Katy Stover had a game-high 24 points and added four assists and three steals for the Chargers who improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Lancaster Bible never trailed on Friday night as the Chargers opened the game on a 17-3 run over the first 4:32. It was a team effort from the get-go as Shanice Smith, Katy Stover, Aubrey Folger and Kirsten Webster all had buckets during the early scoring run. The Chargers increased their lead to 28-10 on a 3-pointer from Stover just past the midway point of the first half.

Cazenovia, to its credit, hung tough in the first half and cut the deficit to 11, but the Chargers once again took control and a jumper by Folger with 1:27 to play in the first half gave Lancaster Bible its biggest lead of the game at 45-22. A fastbreak layup from Webster in the closing seconds of the opening half gave the Chargers a 47-28 advantage heading into halftime.

The second half featured much of the same as Lancaster Bible opened up its biggest lead of the game, 61-36, just five minutes into the half. As the Chargers worked in all of their players, Cazenovia made several small scoring runs to cut the deficit to 11 with a few minutes remaining, but the Wildcats never got any closer as the Chargers defeated Cazenovia for the fourth straight time.

In addition to Stover's stellar game, Folger finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds, her eighth double-double of the season. Webster added 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Smith had 11 points, six boards, four steals and three assists.

"We did exactly what we wanted to do tonight and I thought we executed the game plan for 40 minutes," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Rachel Steinbarger said. "Every player contributed to the win."

Because everyone had a part in the win, Steinbarger was complimentary of many players.

"I'm so proud of K-Webb (Webster) and the way she played tonight," Steinbarger said. "She was a true point guard tonight and we need that from her. Stover's ball handling was extremely helpful all game long and she spent a lot of time in the gym this week getting her confidence back and it paid off. And I think Aubrey has found her game. She is playing well on both ends of the floor right now."

Lancaster Bible's official spark plug, sophomore Naomi Otis, had another solid game as she had seven points and three rebounds. Otis attacked the rim on several occasions and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

"She was the spark again for us and even shot from the outside a little bit too," Steinbarger said. "She, along with Shanice, kept fighting and working hard the entire game and I think that is something that will pay off for them down the road."

Lancaster Bible will play its first back-to-back of the season on Saturday as the Chargers host NEAC North Division leader Morrisville State at 1 p.m. Steinbarger said the team will need to be mentally focused as they play a very good team and have little time to prepare.

"I think we need to keep riding the momentum of this week," Steinbarger said. "We are playing a very different team on Saturday than the one we played tonight and we need to do the little things well if we are going to be successful."
