The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 with an 84-66 loss to Albright on Friday night at the Neumann University Tip-Off Tournament in Aston, Pa. The Chargers will face Wilkes in Saturday's consolation game at 1 p.m.
How it Happened: The Chargers jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the first 1:34 of the game as senior
Katy Stover knocked down a deep 3-pointer, followed by back-to-back buckets by fellow senior
Shanice Smith. Albright responded with an 8-0 run of its own over the next two minutes and the two teams finally settled in midway through the first quarter. Smith hit 1-of-2 free throws just before the end of the first quarter to give the Chargers a 20-15 lead at the end of one.
The second quarter played out much like the second half of the first quarter did as the teams matched baskets for much of the quarter. The Lions, tabbed as the preseason favorite in the MAC, used a quick 6-0 run late in the quarter to take a 33-28 lead, but the Chargers trimmed the deficit to four before the half and trailed 34-30 at the break.
Early in the third quarter, a layup from senior
Aubrey Folger cut Lancaster Bible's deficit to three at 40-37, but that is as close as the Chargers would get the rest of the way as Albright went on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes and opened up a 52-39 advantage with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. Lancaster Bible was able to trim the Lions' lead to nine by the end of the quarter thanks to a jumper from Stover with two seconds remaining, but Albright scored 19 of the first 22 points of the fourth quarter and pulled away from the Chargers. Like their counterpart, the Chargers were also picked first in their conference's preseason poll, but simply ran out of gas at key moments of the second half.

Katelyn Vanderhoff said after her first game at the helm of the Chargers. "We felt like we did some very good things offensively and even defensively at times. Albright came out in the second half and made a run and we couldn't catch up. Going forward, we need to buckle down defensively and not allow the opposing offense to do what they to. Saturday against Wilkes, we are looking to compete for the entire 40 minutes and not have any letdowns like we did against Albright."
