Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Redhawks Down Chargers, 3-0

The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday as the Chargers lost to Roberts Wesleyan, 3-0 in the NCCAA Division I Midwest Semifinals in Rochester, N.Y. The Redhawks move on to the Midwest Final where they will face top seed Grace College (Ind.) which defeated Oakland City, 3-1 in the other semifinal. The Chargers meanwhile end their season with a record of 13-7-3 as the team advanced to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Final Four for the second straight season and the NCCAA Div. I Semifinals.

How it Happened: On Wednesday evening, Roberts Wesleyan, an NCAA Division II school, controlled play for much of the game as the fired 10 shots in the first half and found the back of the net at the 16:58 mark when Sam Moody scored his fourth goal of the season. Just under eight minutes later Shawn Malcom scored his 11th goal of the season and doubled the Redhawks lead to 2-0. The Chargers had two corner kicks and a shot in the final third of the first half, but could not cut the lead in half.

In the second half, Lancaster Bible's offense produced a few more chances, but could not get on the board. The Redhawks' Jake Zito put the game away with 7:40 to play as he converted a penalty kick to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible was outshot, 17-5, but held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks...Senior goalkeeper Josue Bosque made three saves before being replaced by Vann Sutphin late in the game...Sutphin made a save of his own in the final 7:40 as well...Senior Josiah Groff had two shots in his final collegiate game.

The Coach Says: "We did some things well today and struggled in some areas as well," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "We adjusted to the flow of the game and thought we had some good chances that we should have buried. Giving up another set piece goal hurt us and we let their leading scorer turn and finish for the second goal. But give the guys credit, they kept playing and created some good scoring chances later in the game. I loved how tough we were in the second half."

Ardt said he had a great time coaching the team this season and is already looking forward to seeing how the team does in winter workouts and spring season.

"I loved this fall with this group of guys," Ardt said. "I hope they continue to embrace our winter strength and conditioning program and work hard for our spring season. All of that being said, this was a fun year and I just can't say enough about this group of guys."

Information Hodge Podge: This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams...Senior Josiah Groff finishes his career with 27 goals and 18 assists for 72 points...His 27 goals are tied for the 13th most in program history and his 18 assists are tied for the 11th most in program history...Groff's 72 points are the 13th most in Lancaster Bible men's soccer history and his 37 points this season are the most since Jeremiah Kleylein had 56 in 2003...Ardt will head into next season needing just three wins to become just the second coach in program history to reach 50 wins...The team's 13 wins this season are the most since the Chargers won 17 during the 2009 season.
