Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Break Up the Wolfpack

The Lancaster Bible women's soccer team picked a great time to play its most complete game of the season as the Chargers dominated play for 90 minutes to defeat Keuka, 3-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Semifinals. The victory improves the Chargers to 10-9-1 this season and moves them into the NEAC Semifinals where they will face top-seeded Penn St. Berks on Saturday.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible controlled play from the opening whistle, taking three shots and attempting two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the game. Though the Chargers' chances weren't the best of scoring opportunities, Keuka goalkeeper Maeve Fletcher did make two early saves to preserve the scoreless tie. With just under 20 minutes to play, Keuka committed a foul in its own end, setting up a free kick for the Chargers. Sophomore Raegan Horst took the kick for the Chargers and blasted a shot from 30 yards away that went up and over Fletcher and found the back of the net to give Lancaster Bible a 1-0 lead at the 26:12 mark.

Keuka's only two shots of the half came in the final five minutes of the opening frame, but both were good scoring chances as Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing had to be sharp to keep the lead for the Chargers. After Jordan Fredell's shot went just wide with 4:04 to play, the Wolfpack's Hannah Dalle, who scored six goals in Keuka's final regular season game, had a great scoring chance with 1:50 remaining that was turned away by Scheuing.

In the second half, Lancaster Bible just missed doubling its lead in the first two minutes as senior Brooke Cullum hit the crossbar and junior Alyssa Wesner's shot was cleared by a defender as it made its way towards the goal line. Lancaster Bible continued to press for an insurance goal and just after 10 minutes into the half, the Chargers got it as junior Kirsten Webster found space just outside the box and ripped a shot that found the back of the net on the left-hand side.

Scheuing made two more saves on Dalle in the second half and Lancaster Bible junior Alyssa Wesner put the game away with 4:13 to play with her 10th goal of the season. After a ball was deflected in the box, Wesner collected the ball and drilled a shot into the net to send the Chargers to the NEAC Semifinals.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot Keuka, 18-5 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks...Horst's goal was her fourth of the season, while Webster netted her team-leading 14th of the year...Horst added an assist on Webster's goal, while Cullum earned an assist on Wesner's clincher...Scheuing finished with three saves for her fifth shutout of the season...Fletcher had eight saves for the Wolfpack.

The Coach Says: "This is the time of year you want to peak and play a game like this," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Leah Sipe said. "I thought this was one of our best, if not the best, game of the season. We talked all week about how special it is to play in November and host a playoff game. We challenged the team to extend their season and have another chance to play together. The team responded and now we get at least two more days to train together and play Berks on Saturday."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 5-1 all-time against Keuka...In two games against the Wolfpack this season, the Chargers outscored Keuka, 4-0...Webster's 14 goals this season are tied for the seventh-most in program history...Wesner's goal gives her 36 for her career and she is now tied for fourth all-time with Ally Brown (2010-12)...Of Horst's four goals, two are game-winners...Scheuing now has 23 career shutouts.
