Chargers Win on Senior Day - Stover Hits 1,000

The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team sent lone senior Meaghan Williams off with a win in her final home regular season game on Saturday as the Chargers crushed Wilson, 67-34 at Horst Athletic Center. In the process, junior guard Katy Stover scored the 1,000th point of her collegiate career, becoming the ninth player in program history to surpass the mark. Saturday's victory caps another impressive regular season for the Chargers who are 21-4 overall and went 18-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Lancaster Bible, the NEAC South Division Champions, will host old nemesis Wells on Tuesday in the NEAC Quarterfinals. The Express earned the final playoff spot due to their regular season victory over the fourth seed from the NEAC South Division, Penn College. Tuesday's game is set for 7 p.m. and the winner will head to the NEAC Final Four next weekend at SUNY Polytechnic.

On Saturday, the Chargers controlled the game from the opening tip and led 14-2 just 3:36 into the game. It was during that opening run that Stover cracked the 1,000-point mark as she hit a jumper from the side of the hoop off a feed from Kirsten Webster. Stover scored 99 points as freshman at Averett University in Virginia and has since scored over 900 points in less than two seasons at Lancaster Bible.

The Chargers continued to pour it on in the first half and took their biggest lead of the game into halftime as Christy Lorah hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to send Lancaster Bible into the locker room with a 46-17 advantage.

Both teams played all of their available players in the second half and Lancaster Bible took its biggest lead of the game, 63-28, on a free throw from Molly Arnold with 9:06 remaining. Arnold finished the day with a career-high seven points and added four rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore Stephanie Blest found the score sheet as well as she hit a jumper with 1:03 remaining to produce the final score of 67-34. The win completes a perfect home record during the regular season for the Chargers as they went 11-0, including 9-0 in NEAC play. It marks the second time in three years the Chargers have gone unbeaten at home as they went 13-0 at Horst Athletic Center during the 2012-13 regular season (Lancaster Bible would eventually finish 16-0 at home that year). The home NEAC victory also extends Lancaster Bible's home NEAC regular season win streak to 26 games. The Chargers have not lost a home NEAC regular season game since February 16, 2012 when they lost to St. Elizabeth, 75-65.

On Saturday, Aubrey Folger finished with a game-high 15 points, while Shanice Smith added 12 points and nine rebounds to go with her three blocks and two steals. Lorah finished with 10 points and two boards, while Webster had five points, six assists and four rebounds.

And while it didn't appear that way on the score sheet necessarily, the day belonged to Williams who had two points, six rebounds and two steals. Her tenacious defense is what once again set her apart as she helped the Chargers keep an opponent under 40 points for the sixth time this season.

"It was a fantastic senior day for Meg and I hope she can cherish it for a long time," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Rachel Steinbarger said. "Her leadership is so key for us and she has helped everyone grow this year."

Steinbarger was also excited for Stover and her feat.

"It is a big milestone for Katy and I couldn't be happier for her," Steinbarger said. "Along with her getting her 1,000th point, we had everyone on the team score today and the game just turned into something very memorable for everyone."

While the Chargers will enjoy the win for a little while, their attention will quickly turn to Tuesday's NEAC Quarterfinal.

"It's awesome to host a playoff game and winning the NEAC South Division is a big deal to us, but now we have to focus on one game at a time and continue playing solid basketball," Steinbarger said.

Tuesday's opponent, Wells, is no doubt a familiar one for the Chargers as it was the Express who shocked Lancaster Bible in last season's NEAC Final when they pulled off the 67-60 upset at Horst Athletic Center. While many of the names on each roster have changed since that game, there will still be plenty of players who remember last season's game heading into Tuesday night.

The winner of Tuesday night's NEAC Quarterfinal will face the winner of the Morrisville State / Cazenovia quarterfinal which will also be played on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The third and final NEAC Quarterfinal features Penn St. Abington hosting Gallaudet. The winner of that quarterfinal will face top-seeded SUNY Polytechnic next Saturday.
