Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Lancaster Bible Defeats Valley Forge for 10th Straight Win

The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team won its 10th straight game on Thursday night as the Chargers crushed Valley Forge, 74-34 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers are now 15-3 overall and the win marks the third straight season Lancaster Bible has posted at least a 10-game winning streak. During the 2012-13 season the Chargers won 10 straight games and followed up last season with a 15-game winning streak.

On Thursday, Lancaster Bible junior Aubrey Folger stole the show as she posted 23 points, 19 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and two blocks. She missed becoming the first player in program history to record a triple-double by just two assists. Folger was 9-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line and seven of her 19 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Folger is currently ranked third in NCAA Division III in offensive rebounds per game as her season average is six.

The game was a sloppy affair for much of the first half. While explanations for the poor play may vary, fatigue, both mentally and physically, had to play a part as the Chargers were playing their second game in two nights and the Patriots were already playing their third game of the week as they played Monday and Tuesday. Regardless of the reasons, Lancaster Bible Head Coach Rachel Steinbarger was not overly pleased with Lancaster Bible's first half, specifically the first 10 minutes in which the Chargers found themselves trailing much of the time.

"We didn't show up for much of the first half," Steinbarger said. "We played their game and not ours and I thought it was one of the most frustrating halves of basketball we have played this season."

As the half wore one however, Folger and the Chargers began to establish themselves and over the last 9:12 of the first half, Lancaster Bible outscored Valley Forge 20-2.

"Aubrey began to take the game over late in the first half and the rest of the team calmed down and we started to get production from lots of players," Steinbarger said. "Aubrey was the presence we needed at that specific time of the game."

Despite the sloppiness of the first half, Lancaster Bible did take a 36-19 lead into the break and dominated the second half en route to its second 40+ point victory of the season.

"We played better defensively in the second half and we kept our turnovers down which is something we have talked a lot about lately," Steinbarger said.

Junior Katy Stover added 18 points and six assists on Thursday night, while Shanice Smith had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Christy Lorah had a good all-around game as she had five points, four rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Thursday marked Lancaster Bible final non-conference game of the season and the Chargers will play seven games over the final two weeks of the regular season beginning Saturday at Penn St. Berks.

"We have a target on our back and everyone wants a crack at us," Steinbarger said. "We need more fire from the get-go if we are going to be successful. Winning on the road in February is one of the true markings of a good team and we are going to get several opportunities to show what kind of team we are in these final two weeks."

Saturday's game in Reading, Pa. is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.
