The Lancaster Bible softball team battled two teams from New England on Thursday as the Chargers defeated UMass-Boston, 4-3 before dropping an 8-0 decision to Worcester State in five innings. The Chargers are now 2-4 overall and will play two more games on Friday before returning home on Saturday afternoon. Lancaster Bible plays SUNY Geneseo at 1 p.m. on Friday, followed by a game against Bethel at 5 p.m.
Lancaster Bible 4, UMass-Boston 3The Chargers once again overcame an early deficit and scored all of their runs in one inning as they downed UMass-Boston, 4-3. The Beacons scored three runs in their half of the first inning, but were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way as sophomore pitcher
Kelsey Collins was dominant again for Lancaster Bible. Collins allowed just four hits over seven innings and none of the three runs were earned as she struck out seven batters en route to her second win of the season.
Offensively, the Chargers got one run back in the third inning when
Kellie Wallace doubled to drive home
Kellie Wright and Lancaster Bible completed the comeback the next inning when it plated three runs. Freshman
Julia D'Arrigo singled to lead off the inning and
Courtney Koser followed that with a double to put runners on second and third with no one out. Collins walked to load the bases and the next two batters,
Emily Coffman and
Kristen Hartline also walked as the Chargers tied the game at 3-3.Â
Wright's fielder's choice scored Collins to give Lancaster Bible a 4-3 lead. The Beacons put the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh, but Collins shut the door and got Gia Raczkowski to pop out to end the game.Â
Wright finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Coffman was on base all three times as she was 1-for1 with two walks and an RBI.
