The Lancaster Bible men's volleyball team wrapped up its season on Wednesday night at Horst Athletic Center as the Chargers lost to Penn St. Altoona, 3-1. The Nittany Lions defeated the Chargers, 31-29, 25-15, 13-25, 25-15. Lancaster Bible caps the season with a 1-26 record, while Penn St. Altoona finishes its season with a 7-17 mark.
On Wednesday, the teams battled back-and-forth in a hard fought first set that saw the Lions win, 31-29. A kill from Ryan Bury and an attack error by the Chargers finally sealed the deal for Penn St. Altoona after the Chargers had fought off three previous set points.
Penn St. Altoona kept the momentum going as they cruised to a 25-15 second set victory, but it was one last stand by the Chargers that got the Senior Night crowd going in the third set.
Lancaster Bible, having not won a single set since February 7, took control of the third set by scoring 12 of 14 points midway through the set as they turned a 6-5 lead into an 18-7 lead. The scoring run featured three huge blocks by
Caleb Strite and the Chargers finally wrapped up the set on a kill by senior
Corey Leonard. The win snapped a 56-set losing streak for the Chargers.
Penn St. Altoona was undeterred however and rebounded to win the final set, 25-15.
Leonard led the Chargers with 10 kills and five blocks, while Strite added five kills and five blocks, as well as two aces. Senior
Paul Fulbright had 22 assists and a team-high 13 digs in his final collegiate match, while fellow senior
Nathan Diehl had two kills, four digs and three blocks in his final match.
Alex Woelkers had four kills and five blocks before he was injured late in the third set and
Derek Bigley chipped in with four kills, eight digs and three blocks. Freshman
Justin Stoltzfus capped his stellar freshman season with 12 digs and ShaQuan Mack had two digs, while
Justin Bendo added one dig.
Penn St. Altoona's Matt Huey led all hitters with 15 kills, while Jacob Byers added 14 kills. Penn St. Altoona setter Branden McGarvey recorded the 1,000th assist of his career during the match.
