The 2015 Lancaster Bible softball team saved its best for last as the Chargers swept a doubleheader from Penn St. Abington on the final day of the regular season in Abington, Pa. The Chargers scored in their last at-bats during both games to take two games from the playoff-bound Nittany Lions. The victories help the Chargers end the season with an overall record of 16-18 and a North Eastern Athletic Conference record of 10-10. Lancaster Bible won nine of its last 12 games and after a 4-10 start to the season, finished 12-8 over its final 20 games.
On Tuesday, the Chargers took a 3-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings thanks to two hits and two runs batted in by sophomore
Courtney Koser. Koser singled in the first to score freshman
Julia D'Arrigo and then doubled home D'Arrigo again in the third.
Kelsey Collins followed Koser in the third with a single of her own that scored
Kellie Wallace.Â
Abington got a run back in the bottom half of the third inning and the score stayed 3-1 in favor of Lancaster Bible until the top of the sixth when
Alicia Ort singled home
Ali Morton to give the Chargers their three-run lead back. The lead was short-lived as the Nittany Lions scored three unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.Â
Lancaster Bible was unphased and D'Arrigo led off the seventh inning with her second hit of the day. She reached second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Wallace and moved to third after another hit from Koser. With Koser on second after the throw, Collins reached base thanks to a fielder's choice and Morton gave the Chargers a 5-4 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly that scored D'Arrigo. Freshman
Emily Coffman came to the plate next and singled home Koser to extend the Chargers' lead to 6-4.Â
Collins finished Penn St. Abington off in the bottom half of the inning as she sat down the Nittany Lions in order and gave Lancaster Bible its third straight win. D'Arrigo finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Koser was 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Morton was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI and Ort was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Collins was on top of her game again as she went the distance and allowed just one earned run while striking out eight.
Things looked bad after three innings of game two as the Nittany Lions took a 5-1 lead thanks to three runs in the bottom of the third. Like game one, many of the runs were unearned as Lancaster Bible committed seven errors in game two. Lancaster Bible got back into the game with two runs in the fourth inning thanks to back-to-back RBI from Koser and Collins.Â
The Nittany Lions restored their three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning at 6-3 and the score stayed that way until the top of the seventh. Facing their final at-bat of the season, the Chargers sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh and completed the team's best comeback of the season. Coffman began the inning with a single and
Kristen Hartline drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no one out. Ort flew out to right field, but
Richelle Kane followed with a single that scored Coffman and moved Hartline to third. Kane moved up to second on the throw to put runners on second and third with one out and the Chargers trailing 6-4.Â
D'Arrigo followed with another single that scored Hartline and moved Kane to third. Wallace struck out for the second out of the inning and put the game on Koser's bat with runners on first and third and the Chargers trailing by one. With two strikes, Koser connected on a double that went to the center field fence and gave Lancaster Bible a 7-6 as Kane and D'Arrigo scored.Â
Collins, the third pitcher to throw for the Chargers in game two, couldn't close the door as easily as she had in game one as the Nittany Lions loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the seventh. Collins worked out of the jam however and got the final two batters to pop up in the infield and give Lancaster Bible its fourth straight win.Â
The win was Collins' 10th of the season which ties the program-mark she set last season for wins in a season. She currently leads the NEAC in earned run average, strikeouts and wins as she struck out 105 batters in 99 innings pitched this season. Koser had another three hits in game two as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI. For the day, Koser was 6-of-8 from the plate with six RBI and a run scored. D'Arrigo was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Kane was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.Â
"I am so stinkin' proud of this group," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Brad Brubaker said. "We brought nine players down here today and they fought hard every single pitch today. Coming back and winning during our final at-bat of each game is a great confidence booster and a great way to end the season. We are growing and the future is bright."
The 16 overall wins is a new program record, as are the 10 NEAC victories. D'Arrigo, a freshman, broke the program-record for hits in a season with 44 and her 27 runs scored are also a new record. Koser's 28 RBI are a new high mark for the program, as is her .421 batting average. Koser and D'Arrigo also set a new mark for home runs as each smashed four homers this season, breaking the old record of three set by
Ali Morton last season.
