The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak and unbeaten North Eastern Athletic Conference record come to an end on Saturday as the Chargers squandered a late lead in regulation and lost in overtime to Morrisville State, 77-70. The Chargers are now 7-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
How it Happened: Both teams struggled to score in the early minutes as Morrisville State led just 6-4 after five minutes of play. The Chargers found their footing and outscored the Mustangs, 11-4 over the next four minutes to grab a 15-10 lead with just over a minute to play. Morrisville State converted 3-of-4 free throws in the final 90 seconds to close the gap to 15-13 at the end of one quarter of play.
Lancaster Bible opened its biggest lead of the game with 4:22 remaining in the second quarter as senior
Katy Stover knocked down back-to-back free throws to give the Chargers a 25-18 lead. The teams once again went cold from the field and the visitors took a 27-21 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs stormed out of halftime on a 6-0 run over the first 1:17 to tie the game at 27-27, but Lancaster Bible withstood the charge and used a 10-2 run to grab a 37-29 advantage with 6:16 to play in the third quarter. Morrisville State would once again battle back and tied the game at 39-39 with 2:23 to play in the third, but the Chargers scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 43-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
Lancaster Bible took its biggest lead of the game with 6:41 to play as
Krissy Pennell converted a layup to give the Chargers a 50-41 lead. The game slowed down due to fouls and the Chargers found themselves in foul trouble late in the quarter. Despite that, the Chargers still led 59-53 after a layup from
Aubrey Folger with 4:05 to play. Four free throws and a layup by Morrisville over the next 1:30 tied the game at 59-59 with 2:31 to play. Folger's two free throws gave the Chargers a late lead, but Morrisville State's Jordan Anderson hit a jumper with 33 seconds to play to tie the game. Lancaster Bible worked the ball around in the final seconds, but a shot with four seconds to play wouldn't go and the Chargers couldn't get off another shot prior to the horn sounding.
In overtime the teams traded early baskets, but then didn't score until midway through the five-minute extra period. Pennell's layup with 2:35 to play tied the game at 65-65, but Morrisville State scored the game's next six points to take a 71-65 lead with 45 seconds to play. Lancaster Bible would eventually cut the deficit to three at 73-70 thanks to a 3-pointer from Stover, but would not get any closer as the Mustangs hit their free throws to ice the game.
