The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Monday night in Grantham, Pa. as Messiah defeated the Chargers, 85-53 in non-conference action. The loss drops the Chargers to 3-2 this season, while Messiah continued its impressive start and moves to 7-0.Â
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible's offense struggled in the first quarter as the Chargers made just four buckets, but the Chargers found a way to stay in the game as Messiah led by just five, 15-10 after 10 minutes of play. The Chargers trailed by nine, 15-6, with under two minutes to play in the first quarter, but back-to-back layups from freshman
Emily Morgan trimmed the Chargers' deficit to five just prior to the end of the quarter.
Lancaster Bible continued to improve its play in the second quarter and a three-point play by
Courtney Goyak with 8:12 remaining in the half tied the game at 15-15. After a Messiah bucket, freshman
Caitlin Hickey tied the game at 17-17 with a jumper of her own. Messiah regained its edge and led by as many as nine, before Lancaster Bible cut the lead to six, 34-28, on another three-point play from Goyak with 53 seconds to play.
The Chargers continued to stay within striking distance midway through the third quarter as they trailed just 42-36 with 5:42 remaining after a layup from Hickey. Messiah quickly showed why the team is averaging 83.1 points per game however and went on a 13-4 run over the next four minutes and finished the quarter with 59-45 advantage.
Messiah used another big scoring run early in the fourth quarter to blow the game open and Lancaster Bible was outscored 26-8 in the quarter en route to a 85-53 win.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 19-of-55 (34.5 percent) from the floor and 11-of-14 from the free throw line...Messiah was 38-of-66 (57.6 percent) from the field...The Chargers were haunted by 31 turnovers which led to 41 Messiah points...The Chargers were also outscored, 48-28 in the paint...Hickey had her third straight 20-point effort as she had 23 points and 10 rebounds...Goyak had her fifth double-double of the year with 13 points and 15 rebounds...Freshman
Emily Morgan added six points, while senior
Krissy Pennell had a team-high six assists...Kaitlyn Hoff led six Messiah players in double figures with 14 points.

Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We competed hard and made them fight for everything they got. Messiah is a very talented and we responded well. We have a lot to build on going forward, specifically the turnovers, but if we compete like we did tonight, we will make good things happen."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 3-7 all-time against Messiah...The last time these two teams played was the First Round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Tournament...That year, Messiah's roster featured a player with a season-ending injury that kept her from the NCAA Tournament and that player was current Lancaster Bible Head Coach,
Katelyn Vanderhoff...Hickey's double-double was the first of her collegiate career...Goyak was named
Co-NEAC Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
