Chargers Maul Nittany Lions

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Friday night as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Berks, 76-48 at Horst Athletic Center. The victory moves the Chargers to 4-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Nittany Lions are now 1-5 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

How it Happened: The Chargers took control of the game from the opening tip-off and raced out to a 9-2 lead just 2:56 into the contest. After five straight points from the Nittany Lions' Deanna Daddona, Lancaster Bible used a 13-0 run to take a 22-7 lead with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter. Freshman Caitlin Hickey had eight of the 13 points during the run, including two 3-pointers. The Chargers ended the quarter on an 8-0 run and took a 30-9 lead after just 10 minutes.

A lower-scoring second quarter ensued and the Chargers' defense continued to play well as they held Penn St. Berks to just seven second-quarter points and none in the final 5:33 of the quarter. Leading, 35-16, Lancaster Bible once again closed the quarter on an 8-0 run and took a 43-16 lead into halftime. Senior Krissy Pennell had the final four points of the quarter and finished with a team-high 12 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Lancaster Bible maintained its 20-plus point lead in the third quarter as the teams matched basket-for-basket. Sophomore Courtney Goyak continued her dominant play as she scored the first six points of the quarter for the Chargers.

The fourth quarter featured much of the same and Lancaster Bible took its first 30-point lead of the game on Pennell's 3-pointer with four minutes to play that made it 70-38 in favor of the Chargers. Lancaster Bible took its biggest lead of the game with 50 seconds remaining on a jumper from Emily Morgan that made ti 76-42, but six points by Penn St. Berks in the final 27 seconds produced the final score, 76-48.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 47 percent (31-of-66) from the field, while Penn St. Berks shot 26.3 percent (15-of-57)...Hickey led the Chargers with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists to go with five steals...Goyak finished with 16 points and 20 rebounds, while Pennell added 17 points, four assists and four steals...Morgan also scored in double figures with 12 points and added five boards...Kaylee Boger chipped in with five points, while Kirsten Webster had four points and three assists...Naomi Otis also added three assists, while Sara Bell grabbed four rebounds.

The Coach Says: "Going into this game we wanted to set the tempo early to the level that we wanted to play," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "I thought we did a nice job of that starting off with a 30-9 first quarter. Krissy had a good game and controlled the flow of the game well. Overall, I was happy with our performance on both ends of the floor."

On the Team's Recent Stretch: "Tonight marked the end of a tough stretch, as we played five games in eight days, so to end with a victory is nice," Vanderhoff said.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 13-2 all-time against Penn St. Berks and has won 10 straight games, dating back to the 2011-12 season...Goyak is now tied for lead in NCAA Division III with seven double-doubles this season...Goyak continues to lead the country in rebounds with 19.6 per contest...After trailing, 34-5 after one quarter on Wednesday at Neumann, it was the Chargers who scored 30 in the first quarter on Friday as they led 30-9 after 10 minutes...The Chargers had 20 assists, their highest output of the season...Lancaster Bible's 15 turnovers were tied for a season-low.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible plays its final game of the first semester on Thursday as the Chargers host Adrian (Mich.) at 1 p.m...The Bulldogs are members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
