The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team won its third straight game on Tuesday as the Chargers crushed Penn College, 86-47 at Horst Athletic Center. The victory propels Chargers to 7-4 overall and 6-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats are now 1-9 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
How it Happened: A close game in the early minutes, Lancaster Bible used a 10-0 run over a 6:19 span in the first quarter to take a 14-4 lead. The Chargers forced five turnovers during the six-minute span as freshman
Caitlin Hickey began her big night with five of the 10 points. The Chargers eventually led 19-7 after one quarter of play as a late 5-0 run and another three-point play from sophomore
Courtney Goyak, helped Lancaster Bible to the early advantage.
Lancaster Bible kept up the pressure and opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from
Kaylee Boger. The Wildcats cut their deficit to 16 at 31-15 midway through the second frame, but the Chargers put the pedal on the floor again and used a 10-2 run over a two minute span to open a 24-point advantage. Hickey had seven of the 10 points, including a 3-pointer that ended the run and put the Chargers in front, 41-17. Penn College scored the final seven points of the first half and trailed by 19 at the break.
Lancaster Bible took over for good in the third quarter as the Chargers allowed just one point in the final 5:52 of the quarter and turned a 59-37 lead into a 70-38 advantage at the end of three quarters. The final six baskets scored by the Chargers in the quarter came from six different players, including buckets from
Naomi Otis and
Krissy Pennell.
The Chargers almost pulled off the same feat in the fourth quarter as the Chargers allowed just two points over the final 5:37 of the game and won by 39 points.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 63.3 percent (35-of-55) from the floor, a season-high, including 6-of-13 from 3-point range...The Wildcats shot just 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field...Hickey had a career-high 29 points on 12-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc...Goyak added 20 points and 23 rebounds, her fourth 20-20 game of the season and second straight...
Emily Morgan was the third and final player in double figures with 12 points...Pennell finished with seven points and 12 assists to go with two steals...Boger had eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Otis and
Kirsten Webster each had five points...Sarah Bell chipped in with two rebounds and an assist...Alicia Ross had a team-high 25 points for the Wildcats.
The Coach Says: "I thought we played very well tonight," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We passed the ball well on offense and having 27 assists on 35 baskets shows how well we played together. Our zone defense was effective and enabled us to get out and run. I thought Courtney controlled the boards well and Caitlin did a nice job of both attacking and just settling down and finding her spots."
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is 6-1 all-time against Penn College and a perfect 6-0 against the Wildcats since Penn College joined the NEACÂ prior to the 2014-15 season...Penn College had just three players score points as Ross had 25 points, Jane Herman had 15 and Maddie Wenk had seven...Lancaster Bible held a 37-17 edge in rebounds...The 27 assists are a season-high for the Chargers and the third time Lancaster Bible has had 20 or more assists in a game...Tuesday marked the second time Lancaster Bible has shot 60 percent in a game this season as the Chargers shot 60 percent against Wilson on Dec. 3...The Chargers are 57-7 at home since the beginning of the 2012-13 season.
