The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team gave everything it had on Saturday at Charger Field, but the best team in the North Eastern Athletic Conference was just too much, and Penn St. Abington earned a 2-1 overtime victory over Lancaster Bible in the regular season finale for both teams. Lancaster Bible finishes the regular season with a 9-9-2 overall record and 6-3-1 mark in NEAC play, while Abington improved to 12-6 overall and 10-0 in conference action.
How it Happened: Penn St. Abington got on the board first on Saturday when Thomas Vessels scored at 13:39 for his first goal of the year. Vessels took a pass from Michael Albers and was able to chip the ball up and over top of Lancaster Bible goalkeeper
Thiago Naque to give the Nittany Lions an early lead.
The Chargers got very little started offensively in the first half, though had their best chances midway through the half when they had a shot and two corner kicks in a span of 44 seconds. The chances came up empty and the Chargers went to halftime trailing by one.
Penn St. Abington looked to bury the Chargers early in the second half, and after applied pressure to begin the second frame, Vessels hit the crossbar at 52:20. Lancaster Bible continued to press for the equalizer throughout the second half, but the Nittany Lions had another chance late in the second half to put the game away, but Jordan Anderson's shot was partially blocked as it headed towards the net and basically did everything but go over the goal line before it was cleared by Lancaster Bible.
Just over a minute after Anderson's shot wouldn't go in, the Chargers finally tied the game on sophomore
Joel Hughes' first collegiate goal off a feed from
Edward Bills. Bills was able to dribble down the near sideline past a Penn St. Abington defender and as he worked into the left side of the box, Bills crossed the ball towards the middle and Hughes was there to redirect the ball towards the right post. The ball hit off the post and spun into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1.
Penn St. Abington had almost all of the scoring chances in overtime and the Nittany Lions were rewarded for their efforts at 96:55 when Vessels took a lead pass from Hernando Villamil and scored into the lower right-hand corner to win the game.
