The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team had its six-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night as the Chargers lost to Bryn Athyn, 81-71 at Horst Athletic Center on Senior Night. The loss drops the Chargers to 17-6 overall and 16-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Lions improved to 19-4 overall and 15-3 in NEAC action. The regular season NEAC home loss is the first in 47 games for the Chargers who had won their last 46 games against NEAC opponents during the regular season at Horst Athletic Center. Lancaster Bible's last home loss in conference playing during the regular season came almost five years ago, a 75-65 loss to St. Elizabeth on Feb. 16, 2012.
Â
How it Happened: Bryn Athyn came out firing as the Lions took an 11-2 lead after 4:31 of the first quarter. Lancaster Bible used a quick 9-2 run over 2:08 to cut its deficit to two, 13-11 and stayed down by two points, 17-15 after 10 minutes of play.
Â
A bucket and 3-pointer from Allison Warren restored Bryn Athyn's seven-point lead at 22-15 and the Lions maintained a lead over the next five minutes, but Lancaster Bible was able to get Bryn Athyn into foul trouble in the second quarter and the Chargers tied the game at 28-28 after four consecutive free throws.
Â
The free throws that tied the game turned into the beginning of a big scoring run for the Chargers as the home team used a 13-0 run to grab a 35-28 lead with 1:13 remaining in the half. A 3-pointer from freshman
Caitlin Hickey, followed by layups from junior
Kirsten Webster and sophomore
Courtney Goyak, capped the run that saw the Chargers hold the Lions off the scoreboard for almost five minutes.
Â
After Lancaster Bible took a 35-32 lead into halftime, Bryn Athyn knotted the game at 38-38 just 1:59 into the third quarter and the teams engaged in a back-and-forth that lasted for much of the second half. The Chargers led for much of the third quarter, but never by more than three, until Goyak's layup with 10 seconds left gave Lancaster Bible a 55-50 advantage after three quarters.
Â
Out of the gate in the fourth quarter, it was Bryn Athyn's turn to go on a long scoring run as the Lions scored the first 12 points of the quarter and grabbed a 62-55 lead 2:59 into the final quarter. Lancaster Bible again chipped away slowly at its deficit and tied the game at 67-67 on a layup from Goyak with 2:48 to play. Hickey continued to hit big shots to get the Chargers back into the game as well, but after Goyak's layup, the Lions hit two free throws and Warren drained another 3-pointer to give Bryn Athyn a 72-67 lead.
Â
Lancaster Bible tried everything it could to get back into the game, but Bryn Athyn converted its free throws and never let the Chargers back into the game.
