Chargers Win Double Overtime Thriller

It took 50 minutes, but the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team defeated Penn St. Abington on Tuesday night in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Quarterfinals, 73-70 in double overtime to advance to the NEAC Semifinals for the sixth straight season. The victory at Horst Athletic Center, sealed with a 3-pointer by freshman Caitlin Hickey with 5.6 seconds remaining, sends the Chargers to the NEAC Final Four where they will face Morrisville State on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Utica, N.Y. The Chargers are now 19-7 this season, while the Nittany Lions ended their year with a 12-14 mark.

Full Replay of Tuesday's Game

How it Happened: Penn St. Abington jumped out to leads of 11-6 and 15-10 in the first quarter, but a 6-0 run over the final 3:06 of the opening quarter gave Lancaster Bible a 16-15 lead after 10 minutes of play. Junior Kirsten Webster had four of the six points to end the quarter, while sophomore Courtney Goyak's jumper with 46 seconds remaining gave Lancaster Bible its one-point lead after one quarter.

The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter, but a four-minute scoring drought by the Nittany Lions helped the Chargers post a 10-0 run and take a 30-19 lead with four minutes left in the half. Four different players scored during the run, including freshmen Kaylee Boger and Hickey. Webster capped the run with back-to-back free throws and the Chargers opened their biggest lead of the half. Lancaster Bible continued to suffocate Penn St. Abington defensively and the Chargers led, 34-23 after 20 minutes of play.

Third quarters have been nightmares for the Chargers, though Tuesday's started out like a dream as Lancaster Bible increased its lead to 12 on a 3-pointer from Hickey and again on a layup from Goyak with 4:36 to play in the quarter. The nightmare appeared to become in the two minutes following Goyak's bucket as Penn St. Abington went on an 8-0 run to cut its deficit to four, 54-41, with 3:12 remaining. The Chargers quickly stemmed the tide though and another 3-pointer from Boger and a late jumper from Goyak gave Lancaster Bible a 50-41 lead after three quarters.

The nightmare waited a quarter on Tuesday as the Chargers scored just two points in the first 5:30 of the fourth quarter and in the process watched their nine-point lead evaporate to three, 54-51, after Shayna Rodriguez converted a layup with 4:36 remaining. The Chargers held their lead into the final two minutes, but a layup from Madison Kimball cut Lancaster Bible's lead to two and Marah Hayes hit a layup with 34 seconds to play to knot the game at 57-57. After a Lancaster Bible turnover, Rodriguez missed a shot at the buzzer and Lancaster Bible headed for its second overtime game of the season.

The first overtime was a seesaw battled as Penn St. Abington scored the first four points and led 61-57 with under 1:30 to play. Lancaster Bible scored its first points of the overtime period with 1:21 to play as Hickey drained a 3-pointer to bring the Chargers to within one. After an offensive foul by Kimball, the Chargers called timeout and Webster converted a layup to give Lancaster Bible a 62-61 lead with 39 seconds to play. The Chargers extended their lead to 64-61 on two free throws from Goyak with 23 seconds to play, but Symantha Marrero knocked down a 3-pointer with 18 seconds to play to tie the game at 64-64. The Chargers' last second chance wouldn't go and we headed to a second overtime.

In double overtime, the teams matched bucket for bucket over the first two minutes, but the Chargers took a 70-68 lead on a layup from Goyak with 2:11 to play. Hayes tied the game with two free throws less than a minute later for Penn St. Abington and she had a chance to give the Nittany Lions the lead 45 seconds later, but her reverse layup wouldn't go and Lancaster Bible called timeout to draw up a final play. With a six-second difference between the shot clock and game clock, the Chargers held the ball for as long as they could and with the shot clock ticking down from three to two, Hickey took a pass from Webster and fired it towards the basket from beyond the arc. The shot hit nothing but net as the shot clock expired and the game clock read 5.6 seconds. Penn St. Abington called timeout and Hayes' 3-pointer as time expired hit the back of the rim and the Chargers had advanced once again.

The Coach Says: "We've seen it all season long that this team fights when it is faced with adversity and there were times tonight where we faced an uphill battle," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We pride ourselves on our ability to keep pushing and keep playing and we did a great job of that tonight."

On Webster's Recent Play: "Kirsten's play has been critical to our season, but especially in the past two weeks with Krissy going down," Vanderhoff said. "Her veteran presence is felt by everyone on the team and she has no fear when she's on the court."

On the Two Overtimes: "I told the team we sort of got a second chance after not playing well in the fourth quarter and they responded," Vanderhoff said. "I thought our defense was good all night and I thought if we kept that up, we would have a good chance to win."

On NEAC Semifinal Opponent Morrisville State: "We need some rest and recovery because Morrisville State is a good team," Vanderhoff said. "We need to be ready to play and ready to compete, because Morrisville is a seasoned team that has lots of upperclassmen. They will be ready to play and we need to do everything we can to prepare for them."
