Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Reach the Summit

After being stymied for almost 90 minutes last Saturday against Ramapo, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer offense got to work early on Thursday and never let up against Clarks Summit as the Chargers defeated the Defenders, 4-1 in Clarks Summit, Pa. The victory improves the Chargers to 2-1 this season, while the Defenders suffered their first loss and dropped to 3-1.

How it Happened: The Chargers shot themselves out of a cannon on Thursday and fired four shots towards the goal in the opening 4:55. Senior Justin Stoltzfus rang a shot off the crossbar at 11:12, as the Chargers were relentless, firing six more shots and registering three more corner kicks, following the Stoltzfus shot. On the third corner, sophomore Dan Bewersdorff crossed the ball into the box and after bouncing around, the ball was back heeled into the back of the goal by freshman Rama Mugisha to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

Lancaster Bible fired a total of 17 shots in the first half, but were rewarded with just one goal and the Chargers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

After waiting 31:08 to get on the scoreboard in the first half, the Chargers capitalized on two early chances in the second half to take control of the contest. Just over seven minutes into the second half, the Clarks Summit goalkeeper charged out towards Lancaster Bible forward Edward Bills and Bills was able to chip the ball over the goalkeeper and double the Chargers' lead to 2-0.

Eight minutes later, junior Caleb Nelson took a pass from Bills and put the ball around the goalkeeper who had come off his line to try and get to the ball, to give the Chargers a 3-0 advantage.

Clarks Summit responded with a goal at 69:20 by Nathan Hubbard, but Lancaster Bible put the game away for good at 76:34 as freshman Brandon Taylor netted his second goal of the season.

The Coach Says: "We played well overall today and were able to key in on some defensive tactics that we have been working on," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "With all of our set piece opportunities today, we were able to learn more about what needs to happen in that phase of the game. It was good to see everyone play again as we are constantly looking at who fits best at certain positions on the field."
