Chargers Battle, Fall to Third-Ranked Hawks

The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team opened its 2018 season on Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to third-ranked New Paltz at Horst Athletic Center. The Hawks improved to 1-0, while the Chargers are now 0-1. Lancaster Bible dropped the match, 25-15, 25-22, 27-25.

1st Set Highlights: New Paltz jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Lancaster Bible battled back and cut its deficit to 9-7 after a kill from junior Nate Miller. The Hawks settled back down and won nine of the next 10 points to grab an 18-8 advantage. The teams traded points, before the Chargers won three straight points to cut the Hawks' lead to 22-15. New Paltz ended the set over the next three points, taking all three, the last coming on a block from Nick Denoncourt and Aaron Carrk.

2nd Set Highlights: The teams went back-and-forth in the second set until New Paltz created some separation with a 3-0 run that made ti 13-8 in favor of the Hawks. Trailing 14-10, Lancaster Bible won five of six points, the final one coming on a block by senior Kasey Gentry, that tied the set at 15-15. The Chargers eventually took a 22-20 lead on back-to-back aces from Miller, but New Paltz called time out, and won the final five points of the set, and took the set, 25-22.

3rd Set Highlights: New Paltz led, 6-2 early in the third set, but the Chargers wouldn't go away quietly and battled back to tie the match at 10-10 on a New Paltz error. The teams traded points again, before Lancaster BIble won three of four points late in the set and grabbed a 22-21 lead. The Hawks won three straight points and earned two match points at 24-22, but the Chargers dug down and won the next three points, two of which came on kills from Miller and the other on an ace from Miller. New Paltz called its final timeout, and after back-to-back kills, finally won the match on their third match point, thanks to a Lancaster Bible error.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 29 kills and 20 errors on 84 attempts (.095 attack percentage), while New Paltz had 39 kills and 11 errors on 85 attempts (.329 attack percentage)...Miller had a match-high 21 kills for the Chargers, and also added three aces...Junior Daniel Kreider added four kills and three digs, while Gentry had two kills and four digs...Junior Kurt Maysilles had a team-high 10 digs and sophomore Kaleb Ansell had 25 assists...Bradley Schneider had a team-high 11 kills for New Paltz.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 0-4 all-time against New Paltz...The third-ranked Hawks were the highest ranked team to ever play at Horst Athletic Center...Miller's 21 kills are the most in program history for a three-set match...His 21 kills are tied for the fifth-most all-time in a match over any amount of sets...Lancaster Bible lost its first two matches of the season a year ago, before rattling off eight straight wins.
