Wolverines Bite Chargers Late

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team suffered its second straight loss on Saturday, falling to Wesley, 52-49 at the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. The Chargers are now 2-3 overall, while the Wolverines improved to 1-2.

Game Recap: The Chargers opened the contest on a 9-2 run, as freshman Hope Hodges knocked down a 3-pointer with 4:25 remaining in the opening quarter to cap the run. After two free throws from Wesley, junior Caitlin Hickey and senior Courtney Goyak hit back-to-back buckets to extend the Chargers' lead to nine.

Lancaster Bible would eventually lead by six after 10 minutes of play, and Wesley cut it three early in the second quarter, but the Chargers' stingy defense returned, and allowed just three points over the final 5:36 of the quarter, and led, 25-17 at the break.

Wesley cut the Chargers' lead to four early in the third quarter, but three straight buckets by Lancaster Bible restored its 10-point lead thanks to scores from Goyak, Hodges and Mekenzie Smith. The Wolverines hung tough again, and wouldn't let the Chargers run away, as Wesley trimmed its deficit to three, 37-35, with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

After leading by four after 30 minutes, Lancaster Bible led by as many as five early in the fourth quarter, but the Chargers' offense went cold, and Wesley used a 9-0 run to take a 48-44 lead with 2:21 to play. The Chargers trailed by five, 52-47, but got a bucket from Hickey to cut the deficit to three, and then forced a Wolverine turnover with six seconds to play.

After a timeout, Lancaster Bible found Hickey who attempted a 3-pointer, but missed, and the Chargers fell, 52-49.
