The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team lost its seventh straight game on Wednesday night, falling to Hood, 81-74 at Horst Athletic Center. The loss is also the fourth straight non-conference loss for the Chargers who are now 2-8 overall, while the Blazers improved to 3-7 this season.
Despite the loss, senior
Courtney Goyak broke a school record, and added her name to an exclusive list on Wednesday, as she became the program's all-time leader in rebounds, breaking the previous mark of 1,249 set by
Aubrey Folger, and also became the 13
th player in program history to score 1,000 points.
How it Happened: The Chargers scored the first bucket of the game, but Hood answered with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes, but a 3-pointer from freshman
Hope Hodges brought the Chargers back to within two, 7-4 with just under five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Both teams struggled to score in the opening quarter, and a late free throw from Mia Savoy gave the Blazers a 13-10 edge after 10 minutes of play.
Hood built its lead to seven early in the second quarter, but jumpers from freshmen
Sonja Nelson and
Christine Graves cut the deficit to four, and a layup from junior
Caitlin Hickey pulled the Chargers to within one, 17-16 with 4:41 to play in the half. Hickey tied the game at 19-19 on a 3-pointer a moment later, but Hood re-took the lead, and a late 3-pointer from Savoy gave the visitors a 30-23 advantage at halftime.
The Blazers continued to lead in the early parts of the third quarter and grabbed a 36-27 lead after a jumper from Deaja Colden with 7:11 remaining, but the Chargers chipped away again, and trailed just 42-39 with 4:02 left in the quarter after two straight buckets from Hickey. Prior to Hickey's buckets, Goyak hit a layup with 6:50 to play in the quarter and became the 13th player in program history to score 1,000 points. Lancaster Bible couldn't get over the hump in the third quarter however, and trailed 57-46 after another 3-pointer from Savoy late in the quarter, and headed to the final quarter down by 11.
Lancaster Bible trailed, 62-53 after a 3-pointer from Hood's Ebony Pitt, but the Chargers went on a 10-0 run fueled by Hickey, Hodges and Goyak, and took a 63-62 lead after a three-point play from Goyak with 5:27 left to play. Hood answered on its next possession and grabbed the lead back, 64-63, and eventually took a 70-65 advantage. Lancaster Bible freshman
Mekenzie Smith drained a 3-pointer to bring the Chargers back to within two, 70-68, but Hood had an answer every time, and built its lead back to seven late in the quarter and eventually won by the same margin, 81-74.

The Coach Says: "Progress isn't always obvious, but I thought tonight we took good step, and played better than we have over the past few games," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "It was nice to have everyone score who played tonight, but we still need to put a complete game together. Credit to Hood, as they hit some big shots, and to have 20 points off 11 turnovers is nearly impossible, so we need to just make some defensive stops going forward and keep getting better."
