Stunner

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Tuesday night, as the top-seeded Chargers lost to Penn St. Abington, 67-54 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Quarterfinals at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers end the year with a record of 17-9, while Penn St. Abington will move on to the NEAC Final Four with a record of 14-11.

How it Happened: Penn St. Abington set the tone of the game early and jumped out to a 12-2 lead after a 3-pointer from Brittany Keyes with 5:16 left in the opening quarter. The Chargers mustered only two free throws in the opening five minutes, and didn't score their first bucket of the game until sophomore Caitlin Hickey converted a layup with 2:54 to play in the first, that cut the Nittany Lions' lead to 14-5.

After trailing 16-7 after 10 minutes of play, Lancaster Bible began to show some life in the second quarter, as the Chargers opened the quarter on an 11-4 run over the first 4:04 of the second frame. Hickey caught fire early in the quarter, as she scored all 11 points of the run, and capped it with back-to-back 3-pointers that made it 20-18 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

Penn St. Abington recovered and maintained its lead, but a late layup from senior Kirsten Webster, cut the Chargers' deficit to just two, 28-26, heading into halftime.

Lancaster Bible tied the game 25 seconds into the third quarter on a pair of free throws from junior Courtney Goyak, and tied it at 30-30 with 6:10 to play on a jumper from Webster. A 6-0 run by Lancaster Bible later in the quarter gave the Chargers their first lead of the game at 36-34 after a layup from freshman Leah Steiner. The lead didn't last long, and a late 3-pointer from Keyes with 20 seconds to play in the third quarter gave the Nittany Lions a 41-38 lead after 30 minutes of play.

Rather than claw back into the game, Lancaster Bible went cold from the field and free throw line, and Penn St. Abington opened up a 10-point lead, 48-38 after a layup from Iman Richmond with 8:05 to play. Lancaster Bible went on a quick 8-2 run over a 1:19 span, capped by Hickey's three-point play, but the Chargers never got any closer, as the Nittany Lions went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by Symantha Marrero's back-to-back 3-pointers, and took a 58-46 lead with 4:04 to play.

The Chargers cut the deficit to eight with just over three minutes to play, but the Nittany Lions had an answer every time, and Richmond hit four free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the upset.

"We talked about getting a hand in their face when they shot the ball, and we didn't do that enough. When they have balanced scoring like they did tonight, they are a really good team, and we couldn't answer that tonight."

On senior Kirsten Webster: "She has been a great player for us, and it was so awesome for her to be healthy for an entire season this year," Vanderhoff said. "I have loved coaching her, and watching her grow, and she has left a mark on this program."
