Chargers' Historic Year Comes to Close

The magical run of the 2018 Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team came to an end on Saturday evening in Springfield, Mass., as the Chargers lost to top-ranked Springfield, 3-0. Lancaster Bible finishes the year with an overall record of 24-5, as the Chargers lost, 25-11, 25-18, 25-12. The Pride move on to the NCAA Division III Semifinals, and will look to defend their national title they won a year ago.

1st Set Highlights:
-Springfield opened the match with four straight points, but Lancaster Bible finally got on the board with a kill from junior Nate Miller
-Fellow junior Daniel Kreider was part of blocks on two of the next three points, as the Chargers trailed just 5-3 early in the set
-The Pride took a 12-7 lead a few points later on back-to-back kills from Kyle Jasuta, but Lancaster Bible won three of the next four points, and trailed just 13-10 after an error by Springfield
-Springfield won the next five points however, and took control of the opening set with an 18-10 lead
-Lancaster Bible would end up dropping 12 of the final 13 points of the set, and lost the opener, 25-11
 
2nd Set Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible hung close in the second set, and trailed just 11-8 after a kill from Kreider midway through the set
-The Pride strung together another big run however, and won seven straight points for an 18-8 lead
-The Chargers would not go away quietly though, and a block assist from Kreider and sophomore Kaleb Ansell cut Lancaster Bible's deficit to 22-16
-Senior Kasey Gentry brought the Chargers to within six again, 24-18, but Springfield took the set on a kill from Jasuta a point later
 
3rd Set Highlights:
-The teams traded points early in the set, but Springfield put its collective foot on the gas, and won 12 of 13 points to grab a 17-5 lead
-Miller had three late kills for the Chargers, but it was not enough, as Springfield ended the match with a kill
 
By the Numbers:
-Lancaster Bible finished with 22 kills and 20 errors on 75 attempts for a 2.7 hitting percentage
-Springfield had 35 kills, eight errors on 58 attempts for a 46.6 hitting percentage
-Miller finished with a match-high 13 kills, while Kreider had four kills and four blocks
-Gentry finished his collegiate career with three kills and two digs, and fellow senior Sky Woelkers had a kill and a dig
-Sophomore Kole Horst had a kill, two blocks and six digs, while Ansell had 20 assists and a block
-Senior Derek Bigley played his final collegiate match, serving well once again for the Chargers, while junior Kurt Maysilles had two digs
 
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 0-2 all-time against Springfield…All five of Lancaster Bible's losses this season came to teams ranked top-6 or better in the AVCA Division III Top 15 Poll…Saturday's loss snaps the Chargers' program-best 14-match winning streak…Miller finishes his first season in Lancaster with 498 kills, 41 blocks and 55 aces…Horst finished with 219 kills, 30 aces, 164 digs and 30 blocks…Lancaster Bible finished 12-4 away from home this season.
