Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Homecoming Bummer

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team finally broke its scoreless drought after three games, but it was not enough, as the Chargers lost to Keuka, 2-1 in double overtime at Donald H. Funk Field on Homecoming Saturday at Lancaster Bible College. The Chargers are now 3-4-1 overall and 2-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Wolves improved to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in NEAC action.

Game Recap: Lancaster Bible had tons of the possession in the first half, as the Chargers peppered the Keuka end of the field. Nathan Muckle hit the crossbar at 23:42 after a corner kick from Kedric Yoder, and Rusty Risteen had a shot saved by Keuka goalkeeper Ryan Mavretish less than two minutes later.

As the half rolled on, Keuka had some more chances, and then scored off a crazy shot from Rohel Duncan. From 30 yards out on the right-hand side of the field, Duncan's shot rang off the far post overtop of Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Jake Deterline, and went into the back of the net to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead, which they would take into the halftime break.

Both teams had offensive chances in the second half, and Keuka had a golden opportunity to double its lead in the 64th minute, as Lancaster Bible committed a foul just inside the box, leading to a Keuka penalty kick. Samba Doukhansy took the kick and drove it to the right-hand side of the net, but Deterline went that way immediately, and got his hands on the ball, keeping the Chargers' deficit at one.

Just 11 minutes later at 75:48, with the Chargers pressing for the equalizer, Chad Tolson worked his way into the box and his cross found the head of Dan Bewersdorff, and he put it into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied through the end of regulation and one overtime, as neither team had offensive chances in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Doukhansy avenged his penalty kick miss in the second half, as he snuck behind the Lancaster Bible defense and got a partial breakaway which he deposited into the lower right-hand side of the goal to give the Wolves the 2-1 victory.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot the Wolves, 16-13, but Keuka held the edge, 9-4, in shots on goal...The Chargers had seven corner kicks, while the Wolves had three...Deterline made seven saves for the Chargers, while Mavretish made three stops for the Wolves...Doukhansy now has six goals this season, which leads Keuka...Bewersdorff's goal was his second of the season.

The Coach Says: "Today was a tough one for our guys," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "We simply didn't penetrate a defensively shaped team in Keuka, and didn't move them around enough. Tomorrow gives us a chance for redemption in a way, and we will all need to be much better in all thirds of the field."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 4-6 all-time against Keuka...The Chargers' Homecoming struggles continue, as Lancaster Bible is just 1-3 in its past four Homecoming games and are just 3-7 in their past 10 Homecoming games...Bewersdorff's goal broke a streak of 372 minutes without a goal for the Chargers...Bewersdorff's goal was also the 10th goal of his collegiate career.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible returns to action on Sunday afternoon, when the Chargers host Wells at 2:15 p.m.
