The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team put together its first winning streak since November on Wednesday night, as the Chargers defeated Penn College, 55-49 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers are now 5-15 overall this season and 3-8 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-19 overall and 0-11 in conference play.
Â
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, as
Becca Lucente strung together five of the first seven points. Lucente added another bucket at the 6:16 mark to make it 11-6 in favor of the Chargers, but it would be the last bucket for the home team for over five minutes, as Penn College put together a 6-0 run and took a 12-11 lead. The teams traded baskets in the final minute, and the Wildcats held a 14-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Â
The Chargers scored the first six points of the second quarter for a 1-14 lead, as
Christine Graves had two buckets during the run. Lancaster Bible led for much of the second frame, but a late 4-0 run by the Wildcats tied the game in the final minute of the half, and the teams went to the locker room knotted at 26-26.
Â
Lancaster Bible finally began to put some separation between themselves and Penn College midway through the third quarter, as the Chargers held the Wildcats to just two buckets over a seven-minute span, and led 45-32 after layup from Lucente with 19 seconds to play.
Â
Lizzy Tilton extended the Chargers lead to 47-32 four seconds into the fourth quarter, but Penn College slowly began to chip away, and moved to within 51-49 with 1:04 remaining after a free throw from Tori Wolfe. Penn College turned the ball over on its next possession, and a layup from
Courtney Goyak with 28 seconds to play, made it a two-possession game, and the Chargers wrapped up on two free throws from
Caitlin Hickey down the stretch.
