Chargers Dominate 'Cats in Win

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team won for the first time in 57 days on Wednesday night, as the Chargers overwhelmed Penn College, 79-53 in Williamsport, Pa. The Chargers are now 3-10 overall and 1-3 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
 
How it Happened: The opening five minutes of Wednesday night's first quarter will not go down in an offensive record books, as the Chargers took a 5-3 lead with 4:49 left in the opening frame on a layup from Lizzy Tilton, but things got better for each team late in the quarter, as Caitlin Hickey gave the Chargers a 13-12 lead with 2:28 remaining. Back-to-back jumpers from Christine Graves upped the Chargers lead to 17-12, after a bucket from the Wildcats, Hope Hodges knocked down a 3-pointer with a second to play, as the Chargers took a 20-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.
 
Penn College scored the first five points of the second quarter, but the Chargers went on a 13-4 run over the next three minutes to secure a 33-24 lead after a layup from Courtney Goyak. Lancaster Bible continued to lead throughout the rest of the quarter, stretching the lead to as many as 13, before taking a 43-31 lead into halftime on a late jumper from Graves.
 
Lancaster Bible led by double digits for all 20 minutes of the second half, extending the lead to 29 on a jumper from Graves with 6:57 to play in the fourth quarter.
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the floor, including 7-of-17 from 3-point range…Hickey led all scorers with 23 points, as she shot 10-of-14 from the floor…Graves had a career-high 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Tilton posted 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists…Mekenzie Smith was the fourth and final player in double figures with 10 points…Goyak finished with eight points, 14 rebounds and a career-high five blocks…Hope Hodges posted six points and two steals…Katie Baker added the first bucket of her career as well on Wednesday night, as she drained a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter…Cassi Kuhns led the Wildcats with 17 points.
 
The Coach Says: "It feels good to get a win, and I thought we came out with a lot of energy and played terrific team basketball," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We shared the ball well and ran the floor. Lizzy was a huge part of that and did a great job pushing the ball up the floor. We will look to carry this momentum into this weekend for our first crossover games."
 
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 8-1 all-time against Penn College…The Chargers have won eight straight games over the Wildcats…The 79 points scored are a season-high, and the 33 made field goals are the second-most in a game this season for the Chargers…Wednesday also marked just the second time this season the Chargers have shot over 50 percent in a game…Wednesday also marked the first road victory of the season for the Chargers…Goyak's 14 rebounds on Wednesday give her 1,306 for her career.
