The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team ended its season with a victory on Saturday, as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Abington, 67-61 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers end the season with a 9-16 overall record, and 7-9 mark in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 11-13 overall and 8-8 in NEAC action.
How it Happened: Both offenses came to play early in the game, as the teams matched bucket-for-bucket, and senior
Courtney Goyak in particular was ready to play, as she eight of the team's first 10 points, and her layup with 6:04 remaining made it 10-10. Though the offenses sputtered a bit late in the first quarter, junior
Caitlin Hickey made a pair of free throws late in the quarter, and the Chargers eventually led, 19-16 after 10 minutes of play.
Â
A 3-pointer from
Hope Hodges, and a layup from
Christine Graves early in the second quarter gave Lancaster Bible a 24-16 with 8:41 remaining in the half. Again, the offenses struggled, as neither team scored for over four minutes midway through the second frame. Lancaster Bible didn't score over the final 6:19 of the first half, and the Chargers led just, 26-24 at halftime.
Â
Another 3-pointer from Hodges got the Chargers going early in the third quarter, and
Leah Steiner's layup 1:47 into the half, gave Lancaster Bible a 33-28 advantage. Penn St. Abington responded, and used a 16-0 run to grab a 44-33 lead with 2:29 left in the quarter. Lancaster Bible stormed right back, as the Chargers rode
Becca Lucente and her 3-point shooting. Lucente buried three 3-pointers in the final 2:19 of the quarter, and Lancaster Bible trailed, 46-44 after three quarters.
Â
Lancaster Bible trailed early in the fourth quarter, but another 3-pointer from Lucente gave the Chargers a 51-50 lead with 7:23 to play. Hickey followed with another triple, and Goyak had a basket and two free throws two minutes later to take 58-50 lead. Penn St. Abington cut its deficit to four, 62-58 after a 3-pointer from Shayna Rodriguez, but the Chargers hung tough, and made just enough free throws down the stretch to end the season with a victory.

Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "The season didn't look like we wanted it to, but they just kept fighting, and kept working to get better."
Â
On Saturday's Win: "To finish the way we did today was special," Vanderhoff said. "We fought back from being down in the third and found a way to win.
