Lancaster Bible Posts Third Straight Win

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team posted its third consecutive victory on Monday night, as the Chargers defeated Cairn, 78-42 in Langhorne, Pa. The victory moves the Chargers back to the .500 mark, as Lancaster Bible stands at 4-4 this season, while the Highlanders dropped to 1-3.
 
How it Happened: Cairn opened the game on an 8-0 run, but a jumper from Lizzy Tilton and a 3-pointer from Jenna Dombach quickly cut the Chargers' deficit to three with 6:29 to play in the first quarter. Cairn answered immediately though, and used a 9-0 run to open a 17-5 advantage less than two minutes after Dombach's bucket. Lancaster Bible took its turn to produce a 9-0 run however, and Paige Towne's free throw with 2:05 to play in the first frame, trimmed the Chargers' deficit to 17-14.
 
After trailing, 19-16 after the first, Lancaster Bible scored the first four points of the second quarter and took its first lead, 20-19 after a layup from Towne. With the score knotted at 22-22, Faith Hammond, Dombach, and Adalyn Steiner drained baskets for the Chargers, who built a 29-22 advantage with 5:31 left in the quarter. After Cairn scored, Lancaster Bible outscored the Highlanders, 10-0 over the final five minutes of the quarter, and Tenia Brown's free throw gave the Chargers a 39-24 edge at halftime.
 
The Lancaster Bible lead grew to 20 early in the third quarter stayed there for most of the frame. Two late 3-pointers from Hope Hodges and Dombach stretched the advantage to 61-34 after 30 minutes of play.
 
Dombach hit another 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to grow the lead to 31 points, and sophomore Mikayla Via scored her first points of the season after battling back from an injury late in the fourth quarter as well.
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 40.3 percent (31-of-77) from the field, including 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from 3-point range…Cairn shot 28.8 percent (15-of-52) from the floor, and 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from beyond the arc…Lancaster Bible outscored Cairn, 38-8 in the paint, and also held a 26-8 edge in points off turnovers…Dombach led all scorers with 22 points, and also added five rebounds and four assists…Towne was in double figures with 10 points, while Brown had nine points and six boards…Hodges finished with nine points, six rebounds, and three assists…Lizzy Tilton had eight points, six assists, and four rebounds…Hammond had eight points and a team-best four steals…Allison Barnes had 11 points to lead the Highlanders.
 
The Coach Says: "Cairn came out strong and hit some shots, but our message was to weather the storm and not over respond," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Joy Tharrington said. "Tonight was about us, and coming off back-to-back games this past weekend, we wanted to respond well, and I thought we did that and had strong focus for 40 minutes. We had a season-low eight turnovers, and I really like our inside-outside attack."
 
On the team's final week of play this week: "We want to sprint through the finish line, and tonight was a good start," Tharrington said. "We want to continue building our foundation and building championship habits. This week is about us, and tonight our focus and determination was strong."
 
News & Notes: The Chargers are now 21-61 all-time against Cairn, but have won the last five meetings between the two teams…Lancaster Bible is 3-1 on the road this season…The Chargers have held their opponents under 50 points in five of the past six games…Monday's 31 made field goals are a season-high for the Chargers, as were the 11 made 3-pointers…Lancaster Bible has 12 steals in each of its past two games.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible will play its final road game of the season on Wednesday, as the Chargers head to Aston, Pa. to face Neumann at 6 p.m.
