Chargers Finish Year with Doubleheader Split

The Lancaster Bible College softball team ended its season with a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon, as the Chargers took game one of a doubleheader with Morrisville State, 8-0 in six innings at Charger Field, but dropped game two to the Mustangs, 5-4. Lancaster Bible caps its year with a 6-12 overall record and 6-12 mark in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while Morrisville State improved to 1-15 overall and 1-11 in NEAC action.

Game 1
Lancaster Bible 8, Morrisville State 0 (6 innings)
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by Phoebe Clemens' two-run triple that made it 4-0. Nicole DeKok followed with a single to score Clemens, and the Chargers had built a 5-0 lead.

The second inning offense was more than enough for Lancaster Bible starter Nicole DeKok, as she mowed down the Mustang offense. Morrisville State didn't record its first hit until the fourth inning, as DeKok, a senior, kept the batters off balance in her final two home games.

Morrisville State had a chance to score in the fifth, but after a wild pitch, catcher Alyssa Paulson quickly grabbed the ball off the backstop and fired it to pitcher Nicole DeKok who tug out the runner for the final out of the inning.

Inside the Box Score: Lieb was 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk in game one…Clemens was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two walks to go with a run…Steiner had a hit, scored a run, and drove one in…Chloe King, Bryanna Hoover, and DeKok each had hits as well…Nicole DeKok earned her sixth win of the season, as she allowed just two hits and struck out six.

Game 2
Morrisville State 5, Lancaster Bible 4
How it Happened: Morrisville State scored three times in the top of the first inning, using small-ball and a Lancaster Bible error to grab the early lead. The Chargers got a run back in the second inning, and added another in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Morrisville State used good base-running and more small-ball to restore a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth.

The Mustangs tacked on a run in the top of the fifth as well thanks to some more good base-running, as the Mustangs moved runners around the bags quite well. Lancaster Bible got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, as Clemens singled home Lieb who had walked earlier in the inning.

After a scoreless sixth and top of the seventh, Lancaster Bible had the top of the order up in the bottom of the seventh and got a single from Adalyn Steiner to bring the tying run to the plate. After a fly out, Nicole DeKok tripled to center field with two outs to score Steiner and make it a 5-4 game. The Chargers couldn't bring DeKok in however, and the Mustangs had their first win of the year.
