Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Bison

How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Gallaudet 75-72 on Saturday, January 22.
 
LBC (7-9 Overall, 4-3 United East) started strong with Adalyn Steiner swishing a 3-pointer on the teams opening possession. Jade Eshelman hit a layup, putting LBC ahead 5-0. Neither team could find their rhythm, with both teams going scoreless for over four minutes. Gallaudet started to roll, tying the game at seven with 2:37 remaining in the quarter. Tenia Brown and Faith Hammond hit back-to-back layups to put the Chargers in front by four. After the Bison cut the Chargers lead down to one, Lizzy Tilton closed the quarter with a layup to give LBC a 15-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The game remained close early in the second quarter, with Bison tying the game at 17. Steiner and Sydney Heller helped the Chargers answer back, with each hitting layups. Jade Eshelman added a layup of her own to put LBC ahead 25-18. Alaysha Iwais swished a 3-pointer, allowing the Chargers to maintain the seven-point advantage. Later in the quarter, Faith Hammond knocked down a 3-pointer to put LBC ahead by eight points. The Bison cut into the deficit scoring four straight points to close within four heading into the half.
 
The Chargers looked to extend their lead in the third quarter, with Steiner hitting a layup on the teams first possession. Jenna Dombach finished a contested layup to put the Chargers ahead by seven. Gallaudet continued to fight back, pulling back within two points late with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. Heller connected on a 3-pointer to extend the lead back to five. The Chargers held a 55-51 advantage heading into the final quarter.
 
Iwais knocked down a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter, putting the Chargers ahead by seven points. Midway through the quarter, Steiner gave the Chargers a 66-58 lead by hitting a layup. Gallaudet battled back, slowly cutting into the Chargers lead. The Bison took the lead with just over a minute remaining in regulation. LBC could not retake the lead, falling 75-72.
 
Inside The Numbers
- Jenna Dombach led the Chargers offense, scoring 16 points and dishing four assists
- Jade Eshelman scored eight points and she hauled in an impressive 19 rebounds
- Adalyn Steiner scored 11 points knocking down a 3-pointer
- Sydney Heller added 10 points going 4-8 from the floor
- Gallaudet was led by Cassidy Perry who scored 24 points
- The Chargers won the battle on the glass, holding a 41-30 advantage in rebounds
 
Coaching Points
"I told the girls before the game that we are not defined by outcomes, but by how we pursue," said head coach Joy Tharrington. "Unfortunately, our pursuit as a unit tonight was well below average. However, it was good to see Jade continue to step up, especially on the boards and Sydney Heller's continued growth and confidence on the floor."  
 
Who's Next
The women's basketball team will begin a four-game road trip, starting with a matchup against Penn St. Abington on Tuesday, January 25 at 8:00 p.m.
