With just seven available players on Saturday, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team turned in a valiant effort that fell just short, as the Chargers lost to Hood, 61-47 in Frederick, Md. The loss snaps Lancaster Bible's four-game winning streak, but the Chargers will still head into Christmas Break with a 6-2 overall record. The win propels the Blazers to 4-6 this year.
How it Happened: Mikayla Via and
Jenna Dombach hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the first quarter to give the Chargers an 8-5 lead, but Hood used a 10-0 run over the next several minutes to grab a 15-8 advantage with 3:05 to play in the opening quarter. Lancaster Bible finally broke its scoring drought, but still trailed 19-10 after 10 minutes.Â
After Hood extended its lead to double digits, Via drained another 3-pointer to cut the Chargers' deficit to nine, but the Blazers kept the offense going and eventually pushed the lead to 14 late in the second frame. The Chargers fought back again however, and points from
Irene Were and
Sydney Heller trimmed Lancaster Bible's halftime deficit to just 30-21.Â
The teams exchanged baskets early in the third quarter, but free throws from Heller cut Hood's advantage to 35-29 with 5:36 remaining in the quarter. A layup from Via brought Lancaster Bible to within four at 35-31, but Hood dominated the final minutes of the quarter and led 43-33 after 30 minutes.Â
The Blazers put their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 18 points, before winning, 61-47.
