The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team won its second straight game on Wednesday, as the Chargers escaped Abington, Pa. with a 64-60 victory over the Lions. The Chargers, who trailed by as many as nine in the second half, improve to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in United East Conference play, while Penn St. Abington falls to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
How it Happened: Both teams struggled offensively in the opening five minutes, as the host Lions led just 6-5 nearly five minutes into the contest. Lancaster Bible guard
Alaysha Iwais drained a 3-pointer with 4:29 remaining in the opening frame to give the Chargers an 8-6 lead, but Penn St. Abington finished the quarter on an 8-3 run, and led 14-11 after 10 minutes.
After trading points early in the second quarter, Lancaster Bible tied the game at 16-16 thanks to a jumper from senior
Adalyn Steiner. Sophomore
Sydney Heller knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 22-22 with under four minutes to play in the half, and then capped her eight-point personal scoring run less than two minutes later to give the Chargers a 24-22 lead. A late three-point play from Penn St. Abington's Camille Fleming restored the Lions' lead, and they led by one at the break, 25-24.
Lancaster Bible struggled early in the third quarter, as Penn St. Abington used an 8-0 run over the first 3:02 of the frame to build its biggest lead of the game, 33-24. Thanks to junior
Shelby Gard however, the Chargers roared back, as she scored the game's next eight points and brought the Chargers to within one, 33-32 with 4:20 to play in the quarter. The teams traded baskets over the next few possessions, but a late jumper from Penn St. Abington's Angela Sanders gave the hosts a 42-37 lead after three quarters.
The teams again traded buckets early in the fourth quarter, but a three-point play from Steiner with 8:22 to play cut the Chargers' deficit to 46-42. Baskets from Iwais and Gard followed the next two times down the floor to tie the game at 46, and Steiner gave the Chargers their first lead of the second half on two free throws with 6:16 remaining. Jenna Dombach on back-to-back possessions grew the lead to seven for Lancaster Bible, 53-46, and capped the 16-2 run over the first five minutes. The Lions trimmed Lancaster Bible's lead to two with 1:40 to go, but the Chargers hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch and held off one last push from the Lions, securing the road victory.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field, including 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from 3-point range...The Chargers were also 15-of-21 from the free throw line...Penn St. Abington shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the floor, but just 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 8-of-17 from the free throw line...Steiner led four players in double figures with 15 points, while Iwais had 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists...Dombach added 10 points, five boards, and three steals, and Gard was the fourth and final player in double-digits with 10 points...
Jade Eshelman also had nine points and 17 rebounds...Sanders led the Lions with 19 points.

Information to Know: Lancaster Bible is now 21-7 all-time against Penn St. Abington, and has won the past six matchups between the two teams...The Chargers are 5-3 on the road this season...Lancaster Bible had a season-high 51 rebounds on Wednesday...Steiner had 15 points for the second consecutive game, while Gard had a season-best 10 points.
