Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Hunter Gerber

Women’s Soccer Fall in Overtime Thriller

The Lancaster Bible College Women's Soccer Team traveled to the three-seeded St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks on Saturday evening for the United East quarterfinals. The Chargers competed for 90-minutes to send the game to overtime tied 1-1 but it was a late goal in the first overtime that ended the Chargers hopes. The Chargers finish the 2024 season 7-6-4 overall and 5-3 in conference while the Seahawks improve to 16-1-3 overall.

How It Happened: Despite a scoreless first half, it was the Chargers that put the pressure on offensively sending three shots on goal beginning with an early shot from junior Janae Bergey to start the game. The Chargers were able to notch five shots including three on goal while the Seahawks only managed to get one shot on goal.

The Seahawks looked to turn the tide in the second half and did just that notching the first goal of the game in the 54th minute. While the Seahawks looked to control the possession from there until the whistle, the Chargers kept the offensive pressure alive with freshman Zoe Beers netting the equalizer in the 76th minute. This was the first goal the Seahawks have allowed in 12 games this season. The Chargers withstood a final attack from the Seahawks to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, both squads got early looks at the goal including a crossbar shot that narrowly avoided going into the goal for the Seahawks. It was in the 97th minute that a corner kick found the head of an open Seahawks player to place in the back right corner of the goal. The Chargers ended up losing 2-1 on the golden goal.

From the Coach: "I can't say enough about how well we competed tonight," said Head Coach Jake Warren. "These girls fought hard and almost knocked off a top team. Hate to see our season end but we certainly feel proud of the run we had."

By the Numbers: The Seahawks outshot the Chargers 15-9 and had more corner kicks 8-3… the Seahawks had five saves and the Chargers had two saves… Beers scored the lone goal for the Chargers… McKenzie and Petryszak scored for the Seahawks.

This concludes the 2024 season for the Women's Soccer team.
