Softball Splits with Conference Leader in Extra Inning Thriller

The Lancaster Bible College Softball team hosted the United East Volt Division leader, Penn College, on Saturday afternoon. The team celebrated its four seniors with an 18-4 loss followed by a 9-8 win in extra innings. The Chargers are now 14-23 overall and 6-14 in conference while the Wildcats move to 25-9 overall and 15-5 in conference.

Game One, 18-4 Loss
How It Happened: It was rocky from the start for the Chargers as the Wildcats managed to score seven runs in the first two innings of play. The Chargers managed to score three runs including a Riley Danko triple and Alyssa Hamilton double in the second inning, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats scored went on to score 11 more runs. The Wildcats went on to win 18-4 in five innings.

By the Numbers: The Chargers had five hits for four runs and three RBIs… the Wildcats had 14 hits for 18 runs and 15 RBIs… Alyssa Hamilton and Phoebe Clemens had two hits a piece and a double each… the Chargers had five fielding errors… Morder and Herriman had three hits and three RBIs each for the Wildcats… Weaver (13-6) got the win while Danko (3-8) got the loss.

Game Two, 9-8 Win (8 inn.)
How It Happened: Game two started a little differently than the first as the Chargers took an early 1-0 lead after Noelle Martin reached on an error to score Phoebe Clemens. The Wildcats retook the lead 2-1 through four innings before the Chargers tied it 2-2 as Clemens scored.

Two more runs in the fifth from the Wildcats reclaimed the lead 4-2. It was with their backs against the wall that the Chargers came up in the clutch. In the bottom of the seventh and trailing by two runs, Hamilton found herself in a full count situation with two outs left, but the senior hit a bomb to left center to score Kari Ann Mecke and ignite the crowd.  Down just one run, Sheyenne King put the ball in play to score Hamilton and bring in the game-tying run with two outs.

The Wildcats had a huge top of the inning to push their lead to 8-4 and swing the momentum their way. But again, the Chargers found themselves with their backs against the wall and responded accordingly. Both Mecke and Hamilton found doubles to opposite sides of the field bringing the deficit to within one run. Two outs left, Clemens took advantage of the situation and sent a rocket to centerfield walking it off with two runs and a 9-8 win over the Wildcats.

By the Numbers: The Chargers had 10 hits for nine runs and seven RBIs… the Wildcats had 13 hits for eight runs and seven RBIs… Clemens and Mecke notched three hits each while Hamilton had two hits and three RBIs… all three batters had two doubles each tallying six for the game… Danko (4-8) got the win giving up only four hits with two errors.

Up Next: The Chargers enter the post-season with an elimination match on Wednesday, May 1 with the opponent and time to be determined.
