The Lancaster Bible College Men's Volleyball team traveled to face Stevenson on the road on Thursday night, falling in five sets in a tightly contested match. The Chargers drop to 3-3 overall while the Mustangs improve to 2-0 overall.
Â
How it Happened:
Carson Hoover (Jr.) got the Chargers started with a kill, then Stevenson grabbed a 4-1 lead before the Chargers powered back to a tie as
Braden Escover (Fr.) got a kill. The Mustangs then exploded for a five-point run including two service aces to force a LBC timeout, then led by as many as six points on several occasions as they controlled the middle portion of the match. The Chargers relied mostly on Stevenson errors throughout the middle of the match before
Jaiden Flanagan (Jr.) picked up a few kills, then
Timothy Fletcher (So.) landed a service ace as LBC pulled within one at 21-20. The Mustangs got to set point, but Escover landed back-to-back kills to tie the set at 24 and force extra points. Stevenson was able to hang on late and close out set one 27-25.
Â
The Mustangs started strong in set one with a 4-1 lead off four kills, then led by four at 9-5 before Flanagan sparked a three-point burst for the Chargers. LBC then tied the set at 10-10, then a four-point run swung the Chargers in front for the first time in the match as Hoover landed a kill to end the run. Another Flanagan kill put LBC up four points, then
Kevin Bryant (Jr.) helped keep it that way with a kill as well. Flanagan then hit for two more kills for the Chargers' largest lead of the set at 21-15, with Hoover adding two kills late to seal the 25-20 set win for the Chargers and tie the match at one set apiece.
Â
The teams traded the first six points before Bryant and Flanagan each had kills on a three-point burst for a 5-3 lead. The set then saw four straight tied scores as the teams traded blows, then Bryant and Flanagan combined on a block to highlight another run of three for an 11-8 LBC lead. Stevenson then hit for three straight kills to tie the set at 14, then after two more ties the Chargers went back up by three after Fletcher assisted on three straight kills. Bryant and Escover then added kills on a five-point Chargers run with
Gabe Dressler (Fr.) landing his first career service ace, then a botched serve gave LBC the 25-18 set win.
Â
Stevenson held the early edge in set four as they took a 5-2 advantage before Flanagan helped get the deficit down to two. The Mustangs then built a 10-5 lead before a block by Bryant and Fletcher made it a three-point game, then a Bryant kill and an attack error by Stevenson made it a one-point game. The Mustangs quickly built a huge lead as they scored eight in a row to reach set point, but the Chargers battled back as Escover landed three service aces to fend off set five. Stevenson finally closed it out 25-20 to force a decisive fifth set in Owings Mills, Md.
Â
The teams traded the first four points in set five before Bryant crushed a kill to start a three-point burst for the Chargers to lead 5-2. Stevenson then answered to tie the set at 6-6, then again at 7-7 before a service error switched the court with LBC up 8-7. The Mustangs swung in front 10-9 after a pair of blocks, then went up 12-10 before a quick kill by Bryant. Stevenson ended the final set with a block as they came back to defeat the Chargers 15-13 in a five-set victory.
