Men’s Basketball Takes Season Opener

Buffalo, NY- Lancaster Bible won their season opener for the first time since 2004, beating D'Youville College 70-61. The Chargers shot 45 percent from the floor while holding their opponents to a stingy 34.7 percent from the floor and a dismal 0-18 from behind the arc, on their way to their first win of the season. Lancaster received contributions from both freshmen as well as veterans to outlast Spartans.

The Chargers started out slow and found themselves down 22-9 midway through the first stanza. Over the next 10 minutes, newcomer Madison Warfel, (Greenwood, DE) dropped 9 of his 13 points to lead Lancaster on a 20-6 run to close the half. Chargers led 29-28 at the break.

The beginning of the second half was back and forth until the Chargers took the lead for good on Carl Edward's (Baltimore, MD) jumper with 16:11 left on the clock. The Chargers finished the Spartan's off with impressive free throw shooting to thwart any attempt for a comeback.

Carl Edwards and Billy Harrison (Douglassville, PA) led the Chargers with 18 points each. Edwards added 7 rebounds and Harrison 6 assists, which were both team highs. Freshmen, Colin Copper (Eliot, ME) and Madison Warfel filled their stat lines in their college debut. Colin Cooper was a force inside with 10 points 5 boards and 4 blocks. Off the bench, Warfel scored 13 points and dished out 4 assists.

“It was a team effort today,” a pleased Coach Beers said after the game. “For us to battle and to get contributions from so many players on the road is a great building block for this team to build on.”

Next up, the Chargers travel to nearby Elizabethtown College on Tuesday for a 7:00pm contest.
