Chargers Win Home Opener

Coming into Tuesday night's home opener, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team had done lots of good things right despite losing their first four games. They had out-rebounded opponents and shot well from the free throw line. The problem was, they simply couldn't score from anywhere else.

They fixed the problem in their home opener against Penn State-Hazleton.

Four players scored in double figures as the Chargers defeated the Lady Lions 78-47 for their first victory of the season. LBC shot 41percent from the field, including 60 percent from beyond the arc.

"Tonight was a total team effort," Charger Head Coach Bob Shannon said. "We got good play from veterans and everyone contributed."

Nicole Karschner led the Chargers (1-4) with 14 points, while Cindy Blough added 13. Freshman Emily Lloyd continued her strong play with 11 points and six rebounds. Lacy McClaine played her best game of the young season, adding 10 points.

Not only did the Chargers shoot better, they continued to play well on the defensive end.

"We were concerned about Penn State's size, but our defensive intensity and our ability to pressure them neutralized that," Shannon said.

LBC took control of the game right away, taking a 10-4 lead five minutes into the game. The Charger defense limited the Lady Lions just three first half field goals. With just over five minutes to play in the first half, the Chargers led 37-5.

"Tonight was a big step in the right direction for the program as a whole," Shannon said. "We want to be consistent and hopefully tonight's game is something we can build on."

The Chargers return to action Thursday night when they travel to play Penn State-Abington at 7:00 p.m.
