Playing Stevenson for the second time in three days, the Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team looked to avenge their 3-1 loss by jumping on the Mustangs early. After winning the first game 30-26, the Chargers looked to be on their way to a victory, however, Stevenson's Dean Massimini and Jason Matkowski had other ideas.
Matkowski's 20 kills and Massimini's 46 assists led the Mustangs to a 3-1 victory over the host Chargers. They won 26-30, 30-14, 30-24, 30-27.
"Matkowski is their best player and he hurt us tonight," Charger Head Coach
Ben Bewley said. "I thought we played good defense tonight, he just found some holes in the defense."
Despite the loss, Bewley was very pleased with the play of his team.
"We played a lot better against them tonight then we did on Saturday," Bewley said. "Considering we didn't practice since that match, I thought we were ready to play and I was very impressed."
LBC's
Brent Hurst led the team with 26 assists, 14 digs and seven kills.
A.J. Longacre chipped in with 15 kills and 10 digs.
"Brent is taking the leadership role I expected him to take," Bewley said. "We need him to keep everyone going and he helped us a lot tonight."
One thing the Chargers (1-3) must continue to improve upon is ending runs by the other team.
"We have to get rid of our mental errors, and can't lose five and six points in a row," Bewley said.
LBC's defense continues to keep them in matches, despite their lack of size up front.
"We are scrappy and when the opposing coach tells us that after games, that's a great compliment," Bewley said. "I take pride in the fact that our team is scrappy."
The Chargers are back in action on Wednesday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 p.m.
