The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball had never taken a set from Eastern Mennonite University before Wednesday night. They had played 10 previous matches and the Royals were 30-0. Down 2-0 Wednesday night at Horst Athletic Center, the Chargers had set-point, leading 29-28. Three quick points later, the Royals had won 31-29 and improved to 33-0 all-time against LBC.
EMU defeated LBC 30-20, 30-26, 31-29.
John Berry led the Royals with 40 assists, three kills and three digs. Colten New added six kills, three digs and two blocks.
Brent Hurst led the Chargers with 11 assists, six kills and three blocks.
A.J. Longacre had 13 digs for LBC (1-4). Dan McAllister added six kills and two blocks.
"The first set was not very good, but the second and third sets I thought we stepped up and played pretty well," Charger Head Coach
Ben Bewley said.
EMU (2-0) used long runs of points in the first and second sets to pull away from LBC.
"We showed our youth and in-experience a couple of times tonight," Bewley said. "EMU is tough. They are tall and know how to play well together."
Longacre continues to impress Bewley in his ability to learn the game.
"A.J. is basically learning on the job," Bewley said. "He has a great attitude about everything."
The Chargers are back in action this weekend when they head to Utica, N.Y. to take part in the SUNY IT Invitational. Their first match is Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
