All of the shots that did not go in for the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team on Tuesday night against Messiah, went in on Friday night against Mount Aloysius. The Chargers shot 57 percent from the floor and defeated the Mounties, 97-89, to earn their first win of the 2010-11 season.
LBC sophomore
Kody Koser had 29 points, six assists and four rebounds to lead the Chargers.
Andrew Risser had 12 points and 12 boards, while
Erich Graybill chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
"The game was more up-tempo then we thought it would be, but the guys hung in there and played very well," LBC Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "Kody was great and it seemed like all of his shots kept going in."
Koser's 29 points are the most for an LBC player since Billy Harrison had 36 points against Penn College on January 24, 2008.
Beers said one of the keys to the game was the Chargers' ability to score in the paint. Graybill's 10 points are his most since his freshman year when he had 18 points against Washington Bible College.
"We got some good play tonight from Big E [Graybill], and
Dan Merson [6 points, 2 rebounds in seven minutes]," Beers said. "Our ability to get shots in the paint tonight was very important."
LBC (1-1) was up six at halftime and did not trail at any point of the game. Their lead shrank to two with 7:30 to go, but three straight layups from Risser, put the lead back to eight with just under six minutes to go. The middle of his three layups came after he stole the ball from the Mounties' Davis Demetrius.
"That steal and layup was a big play for us," Beers said.
The Chargers move on to the Hampton Inn Coaches vs. Cancer Championship Game where they will face St. Vincent. The Bearcats defeated Penn State DuBois, 87-64 in the first game of the tournament.
"St. Vincent is going to be tough," Beers said. "They are a good team and they are well coached."
While the game will be difficult, Beers said he was impressed by how well the team overcame adversity on Friday night and hopes they can use that mentality in Saturday's Final.
"We are starting to realize that we can play together and we just have to continue to build," Beers said.
Saturday's Championship Game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
