Chargers' Comeback Bid Falls Just Short at Penn State Hazleton

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team tried everything they could to overcome their poor shooting performance on Tuesday night in Hazleton, Pa. Unfortunately, they ran out of time and could not overcome a double-digit deficit with two minutes to play and lost to the Lady Lions, 53-48.

LBC (1-4) trailed by 11 points with two minutes to play and cut the Lady Lions' lead to three with 15 seconds remaining and possession of the ball. After a missed three point shot, Penn State Hazleton made their final two free throws and closed the door for good.

"We forced turnovers," LBC Assistant Coach Adam Surguine said. "We simply did not shoot very well and could not capitalize on their errors."

Surguine filled in for Head Coach Doug Helsel who did not make the trip because of the flu.

Despite the loss, the best player on the floor was LBC's Lauren Heliger. Heliger had 24 points on 11-of-21 shooting.

"She was unbelievable," Surguine said. "I know she missed 10 shots, but during the game, they all just seemed to be going in. She basically did whatever she wanted to tonight."

Heliger was joined by senior Nicole Karschner who had nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds. LBC shot 33% from the field, but just 3-of-19 (13.6%) from beyond the arc. The last time the Chargers shot worse than 13% from three-point land was December 8, 2009 against Penn State Brandywine, when they were 1-of-11 (9.1%).

"We have to get our confidence back when we have an open shot," Surguine said. "We can create all of the turnovers we want, but we have to learn to make teams pay for errors."

LBC will have one day of practice to get their confidence back before they take on Trinity Washington University in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night.

"We have some things on the defensive end we can improve on as well as our shooting," Surguine said.

Thursday's tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Notes:
-Thursday's game will be the last of five straight games away from Horst Athletic Center for the Chargers. They are 1-3 in their first four games of the road trip.

-Heliger's 24 points are the most for an LBC player since she scored 22 points January 11, 2010 against Mount Aloysius. The Chargers lost that game as well.
