The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team fought and fought Thursday night, but could not overcome Arcadia's 22 offensive rebounds and their own poor play at times and lost for the 10th straight time to the Knights, 67-50 at Horst Athletic Center.
The Chargers trailed by as many as 12 in the first half before finishing the last 6:30 on a 12-1 run, cutting the Knights' lead to one just prior to halftime. LBC struggled to score early in the second, but an
Emily Lloyd lay-up cut the deficit to one again with 14:52 to go.
Box Score
LBC would not get any closer as the Knights' hit four of their nine 3-pointers in the next four minutes and extended the lead to 11 with 10:58 to go. Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said he thought the defense was pretty good most of the night, but the team's rebounding was lacking for much of the night.
"We would get a stop on defense and not be able to get the rebound," Helsel said. "We gave up way to many second-chance points and didn't get enough of the loose balls."
Vanessa Clemenson had 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Chargers, while
Nicole Karschner had 12 points and six rebounds.
"I thought we played hard tonight," Helsel said. "But I told the team afterward that sometimes that isn't good enough. We need to be able to execute too. Arcadia is a good team and you can't give them that many chances to score."
The Chargers shot just 30 percent for the game, including 25 percent from beyond the arc. They were only out-rebounded by two, but gave up 22 offensive rebounds.
LBC will look to regroup on Saturday when they face NCCAA East Region rival Philadelphia Biblical University. The Chargers, losers of eight in a row in the series, have not beaten the Crimson Eagles since February 18, 2005. Helsel said he is not worried about the recent history between the two schools.
"I don't put a lot of stock in what we have done against them previously," Helsel said. "This group of players has never played their group of players. That being said, we need to play better on Saturday then we did tonight."
Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in Langhorne, Pa.
