With finals completed and basically just the basketball teams left on campus, one might think teams would simply want to play out the string and get to Christmas Break. Not the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team.
Down 16 points with 7:54 remaining, the Chargers went on an 18-2 run to tie the game at 65-65 with 1:25 to go. After taking a brief lead, Rosemont tied the game on a lay-up with 12 seconds to go to send the game to overtime.
The teams traded baskets in the extra period before LBC went up five with 37 seconds to go thanks to two
Nicole Karschner free throws. After having their lead cut to one,
Lacy McClaine knocked down two huge free throws to extend the lead to three with eight seconds to go. After a missed lay-up by Rosemont, the Chargers had completed the comeback and won, 78-75.
"We just kept battling and playing hard the entire second half," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "The best part was the ladies' belief in each other. They could have given up multiple times in the second half and simply refused to."
Lauren Heliger led the Chargers with 26 points, 18 of them coming in the second half and overtime. McClaine had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Karschner added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Vanessa Clemenson continued her strong play with 10 points and seven boards.
"Lacy's two free throws at the end were huge for us," Helsel said. "Her play, along with Heliger's and
Brooklyn Wilson's was tremendous."
After shooting just 33 percent in the first half (10-of-30), the Chargers shot 44 percent in the second half (16-of-36) to outscore Rosemont 40-26.
"We were just terrible in the first half," Helsel said. "I think that makes the win sweeter, knowing we played so poorly in the first half to come back and have such a strong second half."
Helsel credited LBC Assistant Coach Adam Surguine with preparing the ladies well all week with a great scouting report and game plan. Helsel said Finals Week isn't the best time to prepare for an opponent, but that ladies bought into the changes he and Surguine implemented and the result was a win.
With one game left before Christmas, Helsel said the win could not have come at a better time.
"It's such a lift for this team," Helsel said. "It's a good time of year to get a key win and hopefully we can take the momentum of this win with us to Monday and beyond Christmas Break."
LBC will take on Delaware Valley College on Monday at 5:00 p.m. in Doylestown, Pa.
