How long does it take for a three-point lead to turn into a 20-point deficit? There could be many answers to the previous question, but the answer for the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team on Friday night was, 9:20.
9:20 is how long it took LBC to score their first bucket of the second half as their 32-29 halftime lead turned into a 56-36 deficit with 10:40 to play in the second half. New England College and the Chargers traded baskets the rest of the way, as the Pilgrims defeated LBC, 75-53 to win the opening round game of The Eastern Nazarene Tournament in Quincy, Mass.
After a back-and-forth opening twenty minutes, the Chargers held a three-point lead at the break. The Pilgrims (6-0) came out firing, while LBC went ice cold and scored two points in the first 9:20 of the second half off two free throws. By the time
Dan Merson's jumper went in, the game was out of reach.
"They defended us well and out-coached us tonight," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We have to get better in that area."
Madison Warfel had 13 points to lead the Chargers, while
Kody Koser had 10 points. The 10 points are Koser's lowest output of the season after averaging 26 points the first four games. Koser was not the problem, as Beers said the blame lay with the entire team, including the coaches.
"We have to realize that we won't play well if we don't play as a team," Beers said. "Hopefully tomorrow we can come back and exhibit the team play we had for the first four games of the season."
The Chargers (1-4) will take on Mitchell College in Saturday's Consolation Game. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
"In order to get stronger, we have to demand more from ourselves," Beers said.
LBC shot just 34 percent for the game, including 5-of-20 from beyond the arc. The 34 percent from the floor is the second lowest of the season, better then only the 30 percent LBC shot against Messiah to open the season.
The Chargers' opponent on Saturday, Mitchell, lost to tournament host Eastern Nazarene, 73-57.
