Blue Jays Start Quick, Take Care of Chargers, 80-34

Not much went right for the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team on their first trip to Lancaster County neighbor Elizabethtown College on Thursday night. The Chargers shot terribly and rebounded worse. The host Blue Jays scored 22 of the game's first 26 points and never looked back, defeating the Chargers, 80-34.

After tying the game at 2-2 on an Emily Lloyd layup at the 19:03 mark, the Chargers didn't score another bucket until Lacy McClaine hit a jumper with 11:43 remaining in the first half. By then, E-town was up 17-4 and running away with the game.

Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said he wasn't displeased with his team's performance until the final the final three minutes of the first half when it looked like the Chargers may have had some momentum going into halftime.

"We were down 30-12 and were beginning to do some things well on the offensive side of things and all of a sudden we stopped playing defense," Helsel said. "I understand we are still down 18 points, but if we can keep that gap at 15 or 18 points heading into the half at least we have something to build on. Instead, we let them have three or four easy buckets and were down 24 at the half."

After sinking just six buckets in the first half, the Chargers did themselves no favors by making just four in the second half.

"We did some things OK on the offensive end in the second half, but weren't rewarded with buckets and [E-town] simply made the shots they were supposed to make and made us pay," Helsel said.

One of the few bright spots for LBC (5-9) was McClaine who scored 14+ points for the sixth straight game. Her 16 points were a game-high and she was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

"Lacy wasn't afraid to take charge tonight and she took some good shots and took the ball to the basket more than usual, which was good," Helsel said. "I thought some of the ladies were timid tonight, but McClaine and Nicole Karschner played tough tonight."

Elizabethtown's Kaity Snyder had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Jays (8-5). E-town had 19 assists, many of which gave them easy baskets, something Helsel said the Chargers need to start doing.

"Great teams are ready to play and they have their head up, so they can see what or who is open," Helsel said. "We don't see the play very well sometimes and then our offense jams up and we lose what we are trying to do."

Having won just once since returning from Christmas Break, the Chargers will have a few days to reflect and work on their game. They face The College of Notre Dame on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers defeated the Gators 61-48 on November 17. Despite that, Helsel said the Chargers need to look at themselves right now, more than their next opponent.

"I'm more concerned with us right now," Helsel said. "If our offense continues to sputter along, it won't matter who we play."

Notes:
-The 46-point loss was the worst loss for LBC since they lost by 46 almost a year ago to the day on January 8, 2010 to Kentucky Christian.

-LBC shot just 22 percent, their lowest output since shooting 17 percent against Cedar Crest College last season. LBC lost, 65-39 that day.
