After playing poorly for long stretches in Thursday night's loss at Valley Forge Christian, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team put together 40 minutes of solid basketball on Saturday and defeated Bryn Mawr, 61-46.
Lauren Heliger led four Chargers' players in double figures with 17 points as LBC defeated Bryn Mawr for the first time in five tries. Seniors
Nicole Karschner and
Lacy McClaine each had 11 points, while fellow senior
Vanessa Clemenson had 10 points.
"Heliger carried us in the first half," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "She played great with the ball and shot the ball very well."
LBC freshman guard
Brooklyn Wilson also played well for the Chargers, scoring four points, grabbing seven boards and dishing out four assists. Her seven rebounds led the Chargers (7-10).
"Brooklyn has been phenomenal for us," Helsel said. "She knows how to dictate play, move the ball and play defense. To do all of those things as freshman is amazing. Today she read the play well on the offensive end and guarded their best player on the defensive end."
After going down 13-7 five minutes into the game, the Chargers went on a 16-0 run that covered just over eight minutes and took the lead for good. LBC led by 13 at halftime and though the Owls (0-16) cut the lead to nine midway through the second half, the Chargers fought back and forced five quick turnovers, ending any hope of an Owls' comeback.
The Chargers have eight games remaining before the NCCAA playoffs, with three of them coming next week.
"We want to maintain our focus for the next few games," Helsel said. "We need to understand the flow of the game and make sure we can play through adversity."
LBC hosts Trinity Washington on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
Notes:
-This was the first time the Chargers have played Bryn Mawr since the 1986-87 season.
