Generally during each basketball game, one or two players on a team will get hot and knock down a few buckets in a row. Thursday night at Horst Athletic Center, it wasn't one or two players who got hot for Lancaster Bible College, it was all five players on the floor and at times it seemed like they might never miss again.
No one was in the zone more than LBC's
Madison Warfel who drained six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points. Warfel was 9-of-13 from the field and helped the Chargers to an 84-70 win over Penn State Altoona.
The Chargers (6-11) made six of their first seven shots and raced out to an 18-8 lead eight minutes into the game. Two 3-pointers from
Keith Keltner and the first of Warfel's 3's were key components of LBC's early run.
"It's just nice to have Madison and Keith start out like that," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "Keith didn't force anything and made the extra pass when he needed to, he and Madison were definitely a spark for us."
One of the reasons the Chargers shot 54 percent in the first half was their ability to get open shots.
"We did a good job moving the ball tonight and were able to get open looks," Beers said. "Fortunately we were able to knock down those shots and get a lead."
Leading 43-29 at half, the Chargers didn't rest on their lead and opened up a 19-point lead just a minute into the second half. The Nittany Lions (4-14) didn't go away quietly and cut the lead to 14 with 10:46 to play. Altoona's Kirk Peters led the way for the Nittany Lions, scoring 18 of his 20 points in the second half.
Back-to-back three-point plays by LBC's
Erich Graybill sandwiched around a Peters' jumper gave the Chargers their 19-point lead back.
"Tonight was a positive for us," Beers said. "Monday against Elizabethtown was positive too, even though the result was not, but there was growth on Monday and tonight we showed that."
LBC shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field, including 10-of-15 from beyond the arc.
"We need to show up at practice tomorrow and start preparing for a really tough team in Rowan University," Beers said. "We have been playing well and tonight was the best we've played together all season long."
LBC hosts Rowan on Tuesday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m.
