Looking to avenge at 24-point Opening Night loss, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team traveled to Penn State Altoona on Thursday night. Though they fell short, 78-64, the Chargers learned a lot of things about themselves and how they can improve.
The Lady Lions' Marissa Chapman had 24 points to lead Penn State Altoona past LBC. She was 10-of-17 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from long distance.
Chargers' senior
Nicole Karschner had 18 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore
Emily Lloyd had 14 points and 13 rebounds.
"We played very well despite losing by 14," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We were in the game almost the whole time and they converted a lot of their free throws at the end."
Lloyd's 13 rebounds were a season-high and Helsel said she is quickly becoming more and more effective for LBC.
"She was very active in the post and had great positioning," Helsel said. "We have been working with her in practice on those things and tonight she did a great job."
The Chargers (8-11) were down just one at halftime and took a brief four-point lead early in the second half. The Lady Lions quickly erased the deficit and went on a 9-2 run to take a 41-38 lead with 16:12 remaining. The teams traded baskets for the next 10 minutes before a Karschner layup cut the Altoona lead to three with 6:59 to play.
That was as close as LBC would get as the Lady Lions (8-10) went on an 18-5 run and put the game away for good on two free throws by Courtney Carroll with 46 seconds to play.
"We needed to play really well tonight to have a chance and I think we did that for the most part," Helsel said. "We still turned the ball over too much and can't do that if we are going to take our game to the next level."
Despite the loss, Helsel said he and the team gained a lot of confidence from Thursday's game.
"We need to do a few things better and play a complete 40 minutes, but I thought we played well and if we do the little things, I think we will be in good shape," Helsel said.
