Hodupp's Jumper with 7.7 Seconds Left Lifts Defenders Over Chargers, 61-60

In a game that featured eight ties and 11 lead changes, it was Baptist Bible College and Laura Hodupp who made the last lead change sting the most.

Hodupp's jumper with 7.7 seconds remaining gave the Defenders a 61-60 lead that they would not give up as they won by the same score, defeating Lancaster Bible College for the 11th straight time. Hodupp finished with a game-high 26 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the floor and 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

Prior to the heartbreaking finish, it was the Chargers who controlled much of the play in the second half. After erasing their four-point halftime deficit, LBC led by six points twice and by four with 56 seconds remaining. After Lauren Heliger made a layup with 56 seconds left, BBC came right down the floor and Kelly Bargfeldt nailed a three-pointer with 49 seconds left to cut the Chargers' lead to one.

After running down the clock, LBC missed a jumper with 17 seconds left and BBC's Jessica White grabbed the board and BBC took a timeout with 10 seconds left. Hodupp took the in-bounds pass to the lane and pulled up just left of the free throw line and sank her jumper to put the Defenders ahead, 61-60.

The Chargers called timeout and in-bounded the ball to Heliger. She drove down the floor, but got tangled up with a BBC defender. After she regained the ball, officials called a travel with 2.5 seconds to go and the Chargers would not get the ball back.

"The game came down to a few possessions at the end there and we simply didn't capitalize," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Some of our possessions with two or three minutes to go simply weren't very good and it cost us."

Lacy McClaine led the Chargers (4-8) with 17 points, including four three-pointers. Heliger finished with 12 points, five assists and four boards, while Nicole Karschner chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Helsel said the starters played well, but it was the bench that really lifted the Chargers.

"Our bench played great today," Helsel said. "Brittney Becker, Emily Martz and Kate Farnham gave us great minutes and played very well on the defensive end."

LBC will look to rebound and snap their three-game losing streak on Tuesday when they host another NCCAA East Region rival, Philadelphia Biblical University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Notes:
-The Chargers have not beaten the Defenders (6-4) since the 2003 NCCAA East Region Final.

-LBC shot 41 percent from the floor, but only 4-of-13 from beyond the arc.
