Chargers Fall Flat in Washington

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team played its first-ever game in Washington state on Friday night. It didn't go well.

The Chargers shot 13% (3-of-23) in the second half, en route to a 76-28 loss to Whitman College in the opening game of the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic. Freshman Sarah Heilenman led LBC with nine points, while Lauren Heliger had six points and seven rebounds. The Chargers shot just 26.1% (12-of-46) for the game, while Whitman shot 39.7%.

"Whitman is very good and we simply ran out of gas in the second half," Chargers' Assistant Coach Adam Surguine said. "I would hope that we will come out and play much better on Saturday night."

Emily Lloyd had the Chargers' first bucket of the second half at the 12:49 mark, and it took another six minutes for LBC to score again. Heilenman's layup at 6:29, made it 66-24 in favor of Whitman. Tiffani Traver led Whitman with 15 points, while Meghan White had a game-high 17 rebounds. Whitman out-rebounded the Chargers, 61-31.

The 48-point loss was the worst for LBC since January 8, 2009 when they lost by 53 to Ohio Christian, 85-32.

The Chargers will face Whitworth University tonight at 6 p.m. [9 p.m. EST] and fly back to Lancaster on Sunday.
