Chargers Make it Two in a Row with Win Over Wilson

Prior to heading to the West Coast for the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team wanted to not only even its overall record at 2-2, but finish the first semester with a 2-1 record in NEAC play with a win over Wilson College.

LBC's Lauren Heliger made sure the Chargers would enjoy the cross country flight by posting a game-high 27 points, propelling the Chargers to a 53-31 victory over the host Phoenix. Heliger was 10-of-20 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line en route to a career-high 27 points. Her 27 points are the most for a Chargers' player in one game since Nicole Karschner scored 28 points against Valley Forge Christian on February 26, 2008.

The rest of the game did not go well for either team as LBC shot just 35% (21-of-60) from the floor and did not make a 3-pointer all night. Wilson fared no better, shooting 21.6% (8-of-37) from the floor and making just four field goals in each half.

"It was pretty ugly tonight," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We played well in spots, but there were times we didn't do anything right. Heliger took charge of the game when no one else seemed to want to."

Despite turning the ball over 20 times, LBC forced 32 Wilson turnovers and had a season-high 23 steals. The Chargers are now 2-1 in NEAC play and are alone in second place behind South Division leader Penn St. Harrisburg.

"It's good to be 2-1, but the regular season is long and we still need to get better," Helsel said. "We need to do the little things better."

LBC will play its next NEAC game on January 6 when they face Wells in Aurora, N.Y. This weekend however, the Chargers will face host Whitman College on Friday night and Whitworth College on Saturday night.

"We hope to be competitive for as long as we possibly can," Helsel said. "We don't know too much about the two teams we are playing, but hopefully we can stay with them for the full 40 minutes."

Friday night's tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. pacific time, so the game won't end until after midnight on the East Coast. If you are up though, live stats will be available for both games.

Notes:
-Heliger's previous career high was 26 points which she scored on December 17, 2010 in a 78-75 win over Rosemont.
